restore used ipod

I bought a used ipod classic and none of the standard ways of doing a restore seem to be working.

-When I plug it in to my macbook and open itunes i do not get a message about erasing

-it is not highlighted when i choose it in itunes, just opens the files

-I have no option to erase or restore anywhere i can see in itunes

-the only reset option under settings on the device itself does not restore it, just resets

Suggestions are SO welcome :)

Tks!

See If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support. What are your stats? If you have a Mac it can sometimes help to have the device restored on Windows (or vice versa).
