Add a device to the list

I tried the most obvious things suggested by other posters. Specifically logging into the apple id page for the account I want to add the computer to.

Did the same thing with the cloud account I want to add the computer to.

All either one does is allow me to remove existing devices.

Apple help site not helpful:

Add a device to the list

To add a device to the list, you need to sign in with your Apple ID. After you sign in on a device with your Apple ID, that device appears in the list. Here's where you need to sign in:

  • For OS X Yosemite and later or Windows 10 and later, sign in to iCloud on the device.

To further confuse things I want to add devices with a different apple id. My Macbook and ipad. My dad passed recently. I am decommissioning his imac. I want to keep his apple id alive cause he purchased music with it.

I've tried apple id page and cloud page from both computers logging in with his id. All I can do is delete existing accounts one which I did was his phone.

The edit button on the right is missing for the devices section of the page but not for any of the other sections like security and payment.

So did removing the phone have something to do with this? I read somewhere there is a 90 day time limit between adding and deleting devices? I didn't understand the specific details. I can't believe I would be locked out for 90 days cause I removed a phone.

I've committed myself to given this computer to a friend. I would like to be able to do this right away. Been working and researching 3 days in order to make sure I don't loose anything. Already backed up drive plan on cloning it also.

See Authorization vs. association - Apple Community for some background. A device is added to the list when you perform certain actions such as downloading past purchases. You can make use of your father's unprotected media by simply copying it to your library. For protected content you would need to authorize your computer to his ID. (I'm assuming you have your own computer at this point). As noted in the article attempting to download content from different IDs to a single computer may not always be possible. Associating this computer with a new ID is not something you want to do immediately before giving it away. Backup the whole computer if possible. You could also take a separate copy of the user profile on a second drive for added security. See What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support.

I'm not sure if it is possible to have one device be a trusted device for more than one Apple ID. As mentioned in Authorization vs. association - Apple Community one workaround for being able to access purchases from more than one account on a single computer is to link the accounts together with Family Sharing, something you might be able to do before you wipe his computer. That said, as long as you already have all of the content downloaded and stored on an external drive you can use it as you see fit, authorizing your computer to his ID for protected content if required.

. I want to edit my macbook which is already on my dad's apple id account so that it is one of the 2 computers in that 2 step thing apple is doing now.

No didn't see the option to sign in from system preferences/icloud. Not sure how that would be any different than going to the apple id page. Or the apple cloud page. Both of which I did. Using my dad's apple id and password.

That makes sense not having a device trusted on more than one apple id. IE my macbook which is associated with my apple id. I have a 2012 ipad I wanted to get authorized for the content. But based on what you said maybe I should try to make it a trusted device? Still have no way to add devices. At some point will want to delete my dad's imac. I can do that. Just can't add a device. And the imac of course is a trusted device. And there are only 3 on the apple id. I'm guessing because I have my phone# and no trusted devices associated with the account I probably won't loose access to it? Because once I delete the imac I will have no trusted devices. My brother has a 2012 ipad (my dads) that is a trusted device, but that does me little good cause he is in fl and I in NM and the 0S needs updating. And he is really difficult to work with.

I know apple is trying to make this process easier.

In this situation it would be a lot easier if I could just go back to having a password and an email account and a ph# associated with it.

From Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support:

Trusted devices

A trusted device is an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 9 and later, or a Mac with OS X El Capitan and later that you've already signed in to using two-factor authentication. It’s a device we know is yours and that can be used to verify your identity by displaying a verification code from Apple when you sign in on a different device or browser.

From View and remove your associated devices in iTunes - Apple Support:

More about associated devices

Your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, or Android phone automatically associate with your Apple ID and iTunes when you:

When you try to associate another Apple ID with a device that was already associated, you might see a message that says, "This device is associated with another Apple ID. You cannot associate this device with another Apple ID for [number] days." Depending on when you associated your device with your Apple ID, you might need to wait up to 90 days to associate the device with another Apple ID.

So you add a device to the trusted devices list by signing into your Apple ID on the device when two-factor authentication is enabled. You add a device to the associated devices list by using certain features of the iTunes Store.

I signed into my dad's apple id (webpage) with his computer and wanted to add my macbook to his apple id account.

I tried doing this from system preferences after you mentioned this and had no option to sign in. I did have the option to remove a device which of course I don't want to do at this point.

I'm guessing the edit button on the webpage is disabled for some reason. Don't know why. It's not ghosted it simply isn't there. But is on all the other options like payment and profile.

I enabled 2 factor on my dad's computer. Don't ever remember doing it on mine but it also is enabled.

". If you signed in with your dad's ID, it would be on the device list for that Apple ID, not your ID."

Isn't that what I want? My devices to show up on his account? If I am going to be authorized to use his music? I actually have my macbook on his account already but I want to assign it as one of the devices for that 2 step thing. I already managed to get my phone on it. Just want as much insurance I'm not going to be locked out as possible.

Plan is to add my ipad to his apple id so that I can play his store bought content. My Macbook is already added to his id for this purpose. I don't know how it got there. I don't remember doing it. I want to change the macbooks status so it's one of the two devices apple allows for the two step thing.

I'm using my dad's itunes library from an external disk I copied it to on my macbook.
