Not Enough Disk Space when importing to iMovie

It seems that no matter what I try to import, I get this message (literally this screenshot is bigger than the image I tried to import).

I have a 250GB MacBook Pro with around 30GB free, which should be plenty for a 26KB jpeg. How do I fix this? I've got to put together a slideshow for a funeral this week.

I have already rebooted my machine, uninstalled and reinstalled iMovie from the App Store and completely deleted my iMovie library.

Try moving your iMovie library to an external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). That worked for one contributor to this forum.

I am having the exact same issue. Did you recently install the Catalina Beta?

If by chance you are using Beta Catalina we are not able to discuss it here because it is not a finalized product.
