iMovie - not enough disk space even though it's brand new

I just purchased a new macbook air and am trying to use iMovie for the first time on this computer. When I try to import a small video clip I get the message "not enough disk space at the selected destination". How is there not enough disk space when I've never even used iMovie yet? It also says to choose another destination- how do I do that?
