hourly percentage of rain in weather app

In the weather app, the percentage of rain for the day is often less than the percentage of rain indicated for a particular hour of the day. Where I live for example, the chance of rain indicated for the entire day today is 20%, but at noon the chance of rain is Indicated to be 40%, then 70% at 1pm, 70% at 2pm, 60% at 3pm, and so on. Obviously the actual probability that it will rain at 1pm has to be lower than the probability that it will rain at some particular hour of the same day.

Rain percentage is a two pronged thing. That percentage often means/can mean ‘20% of an area may get rain’, then when you’re looking hour to hour you have certain hours where that 20% is more likely to occur. (Here in the midwest that’s often afternoons/evenings when convection heating leads to storms building up, in the desert south west during monsoon season that can mean early afternoon)

So in your case, 20% of the area may get rain, with the hours of noon - 4pm being the most likely for that rain to happen.
