Basically, I'm using a Roland td30 drum module and the pads for midi production in Logic Pro x. I've mapped my hi hat so many times yet cannot get a closed hi hat noise. Logic doesn't pick up on it, doesn't differentiate even though my closed and open hi hat are mapped to different areas that are consistent with standard mapping.
Have you tried using a utility called MidiMon? It will display all of the MIDI notes coming into your Mac. Make sure that the actual MIDI data is making it to your Mac.
Hmm - any chance that a used TD30? Someone before you may have done some creative mapping. Perhaps it's time to consider a factory reset of the TD30?
First trick is to make sure the note(s) are making it into the computer. Then we'll see what's going on in Logic.
If it's not making it in, we'll have to turn our attention to the TD-30 (out of my depth). If it is making it in, is there any kind of a MIDI transform working that may clobber it?
I don't own a TD30 but I remember you may need to calibrate the hi hat offset to get it works properly.
You will find the instructions in the TD30 manual.

It couldn't hurt. Better - you check the manual/MIDI description and see what their philosophy is regarding the Hi-Hat and MIDI.

Alright so with the midi monitor I struck both my open and closed hi hat.
The closed hi hat corresponds to A#1 64, and the monitor says "NOTE OFF" not sure what that means. Probably something to do with the td30 though?

I'm not at my set currently; however, I know the open hh and closed hh are coming up as separate midi notes. For some reason they don't correspond to what's set on my td30 though for instance the open hi hat on my Roland is 46A#2 and midi controller says it's a 64A#1???
I will give that a go. I really appreciate that info! Just downloaded a midi monitor so I'll see if the data is making it or not.
What would you recommend I do if it's not?

Hey man. I bought it myself and actually recently factory reset it when I updated it (about 3 months ago) do you think I should try to factory reset again?
With each MIDI note, there is a corresponding NOTE ON and NOTE OFF event. Otherwise the notes wouldn't know how long to stay on. Now with drums, this is usually less of an issue since most drum sounds are 'single shot' sounds - strike it once and you get your sound.
Now regarding your situation, the TD30 engineers MAY have decided to use NOTE ON with the open hi-hat, and then NOTE OFF for the closed HH. What note do you see on the MIDI monitor when you strike the open HH? If it's the same note, only with a NOTE ON, you have confirmed this.
Sometimes a NOTE ON event with a velocity of 0 can be treated like a NOTE OFF. Some keyboards are capable of playing one note when initially pressed, and then another when the note is released - my Kurzweil is one such example.
In the olden days they sometimes solved the HH problem (and cymbals) by using exclusivity groups. Hitting another cymbal in the same exclusivity group causes the first one to shut off. Very likely they may be using this approach as well for the HH. Let the open hats ring until another HH event arrives, in which case a closed hat would shut off the open hats.
It will likely take some research time with the manual to find out how Roland addresses this. You may be able to change the NOTE OFF to another NOTE ON, but in the same exclusivity group. That would still serve to silence the open HH.
