I'm having tons of proximity issues during a call. It's so bad.. I have to use the headset to make calls.

While on the phone, the calls go in to Mute, Speaker, starts dialing people, FaceTime, and something clicks hang up.

This phone is unusable for talking without speaker or headset.

Please fix this!

Thanks,
Eric S.

Here's a Gizmodo report about the 4.1 beta, with a small mention about the proximity sensor:

"As far as other issues go—the fickle proximity sensor in particular—it feels like there's improvement, but only time and more usage will tell if I can finally stop worrying about accidentally hanging up on someone due to a quirky proximity sensor."

I've only had my iphone 4 for a week. I noticed several times during calls that while I was talking the other end seemed 'dead'. I pulled the phone away from my face to find the "Hold" button turned on. Some calls resulted in the "Speakerphone" button coming on and everyone in the room could hear part of my conversation.

Last night was the last straw. I called a friend to chat and had to call her back 13 times in order to finish our conversation!!!! Yes 13 times!!!!!!! The last time, evidently I hung up on her and somehow my face dialed my husband's phone. ***?????????? I spend the whole conversation with the phone held so tightly to my face and ear that it was painful. This is ridiculous!!!!!

I hope they also address this proximity sensor issue tomorrow (even if silently in software update) because I have a feeling that a lot of people have this problem and don't know that they do.

When they are cutting off calls or muting calls with their face, (hello?, hello?, etc) they probably are thinking it is antenna related when it actually is a problem compounded by the antenna AND proximity sensor issue.

I am just posting this since I know Apple is reading this. Apple - I hope you do, because if you go all out of the way to only fix the antenna issue and do not fix this as well then you may as well shoot yourself in the foot when everybody realizes there is a SECOND major flaw.

Apple, do the right thing and fix it.

I hope the company has at least learned that we are in the internet age and the cover up strategy no longer works. Information travels too fast.

Most people do not know it is BOTH things. They just may have heard through the press that the phone is a little wacky and are not making the connection that it is the antenna AND proximity sensor. I hope Apple fixes this. Apple, your reputation is riding on it.

I had the iPhone 2G and upgraded to the iphone 4. I now have a significant problem with the sensor as well. Always hanging up on friends, pressing the mute button, etc.

Really horrible experience.

I can't believe Apple hasn't commented on this.

I have noticed the problem with the sensor since I got my iP4 - if the room was dimly lit, I would notice the backlight turning on and off during a call. Never had a problem with dialing/muting/ending calls until last night. My cheek took over and dialed a couple numbers, I thought it was the other party on the line but they told me that I did it. Then it muted the same call as I was talking away and the other person didn't respond. Looked at the phone and saw that mute was activated. Rather annoying. I switched on Bluetooth between calls so I could use my headset but the Bluetooth wouldn't turn on and when the switch is thrown the user can't turn it off because the switch disappears. So I had to reboot the phone and try again (second time this has happened).

I've never complained about the phone because I have it in a case so I don't have the antenna reception issues. This proximity (and now BT) issue is becoming more annoying. I'm sure that I could just hold the phone away from my ear during calls so there's no contact with my cheek/ear but I just want it to work the way it's designed to work. Maybe this is the new design language at Apple....???

It appears there's two issues one being software, I believe they have made changes to this in 4.1 guess we will see.

But to be honest with all the dodgy Manufacturing defects that are cropping up wouldn't suprise me in the least if this wasn't yet another one.

If that didn't do it for you only other thing to try might be a complete restore.

Failing that either take it back or wait and see.

I may have remembered the sequence wrong I found it on Goggle, and it had to be done in a set way to work.

But yes like u I had the same problem it appears to have resolved it for me.

That is a good thing that is can be fixed for a short amount of time with a reset. That means that it is probably a software issue. I have had no problems with the death grip but the proximity issue is huge for me. I had an offer on my iphone 3gs yesterday and had to tell the guy that I'm going to wait to sell it. That sucked. We will see tomorrow I guess. Im ready to return it if its not fixed soon. I would miss the screen and facetime.

Agreed, mj. I've also been having the proximity sensor issues, and it's the worst thing about the phone for me Holding the phone normally, my face still ends up touching the screen and causing calls to end or become muted. I understand the antenna issues are much more high profile, but I really hope Apple will address the sensor issues tomorrow. I've got my old 3G that I could go back to if I have to, but I really don't want it to come to that.

Nothing will be adressd tomorrow. As we already tested in our lab it is a design problem. The software 4.1 also we tested already does not fix nothing , other than better Signal "picture". Proximity is the same problem with 4.1 as before.
Tomorrow we will hear great exuses and confirmation apple is working and will fixx all soon. They will also extend the return time.
But nothing will be soon !!
