Ok, so reports seem to be coming in that Apple has started to silently recall / rolling out changed hardware with newer iPhone 4's.
Now, I do not know if this is true or not...but many people are talking about judging the fact that if you are getting the iPhone 4 made in 28th week or later, then all issues have been resolved.
So, some people are getting week 28 iPhone 4 upon a new order, and some others upon replacement.

Read this >> http://gizmodo.com/5587029/iphone-4-silent-recall-some-readers-confirm

Might help.

I read about a workaround until Apple resolves the issue - once you're in a call, hit the home button. It will take you back to your home page. You could also click a photo or something that would prevent you from touching mute or dialing numbers.

Obviously it's not something you'd want to do for long, kind of a pain to remember, but it will save you some of the headaches of a malfunction.

I just spoke with an Apple Care rep regarding issue with proximity sensor. He told me it was a result of the phone being glass. It is very sensitive. I've had all calls made end up on mute, hung up, another number dialed... He also said I have to hold it differently to avoid the problem. He said he had the same issue with his phone and if I were to exchange it, I'd have the same problem with a new phone. In summary, there was nothing he could do about it, but he suggested I hold the phone differently. I'm wondering if I head to an Apple Store if I will get the same response. I think it is a hardware issue because I know other people who are not having this problem and some that are.

I think I'm going to end up using the earphones supplied with my IP4 for every call. My proximity sensor is on the blink too and I've had the phone less than a week. I'm dreading the time I cheek-dial someone in my contacts who's abroad on holiday, I can feel it happening soon and then my phone bill will shoot through the roof (wonder if Apple will refund me if it DOES happen???)

I've been onto my carrier (Orange UK) twice now over this problem and was told that when I get my bumper it'll solve this issue and the signal problem (yeah, right, I'll not hold my breath!). I was also told that I can apply now on the Apple site for my free bumper too which is wrong. I've reset my phone using the reset function actually on the phone and via iTunes. My carrier is ringing me back tomorrow night to see if I have any further cheek-dialing episodes and if I do then they'll refer me to Apple.

Incidentally I have the 16gig and my friend who has the 32gig version has the signal problem but not the proximity sensor one ... hmmmm

Alright everyone, it was a good run, but I'm done. I've decided to keep the iPhone 4 despite having issues with the proximity sensor. The display is too pretty to go back to my 3GS...to me that's like going back to VHS. I'm going to trust that Apple will take care of me/us.

Can't handle the stress of following the forum anymore. Too much fighting and not enough solutions. Thanks to TrentP and iPhoneFanSince2G. And for the haters who think we are trolls and making it up, I sincerely hope your phones never develop the issue. It has made the last 3 weeks of my life very uncomfortable to say the least.

@ Apple, I patiently wait for a hardware / software update....

Now as you see Jobs and the video clip he deconsecrated is correct. People like the iphone 4 ( Nothing to like when phone is not working , disconnecting calls , put callers on mute) regardless of anything. Those , I respect their position a lot , unconditionally believe that Apple will take care of them . Why ? Did not you see the way apple took care of the antenna issue ? But still no logic , no reasoning but unconditional stuck to something not working.

Now I am talking about very smart people as we have them here on this forum for a long time and those who really do experience the problem with the sensor .
But even them do not return the phone even it cost nothing and even they still could get the phone back when it fixed.
This is how the return phones rate is still lower and will be low for a while .

I wish you guys to enjoy your iphone 4 and will hear from you begging apple to help you again when in months you stuck with the same problem.

Aw...I hope everything works out for you! Keep us updated with any major news/developments.

You've been most helpful. I'm kind of in the same boat. I don't really post anymore. Just keep checking in to see if there are any major updates. After all this, I think we need an all-expenses-paid, 3-week trip to Lantau Island!

I agree. That is why I returned mine today. No bashing though. I love Apple products.

If and "when" they fix it, I will gladly go and get another one. I just don't want to get stuck with it. If they hadn't been called on the carpet about the antenna issue, I don't think they would have ever addressed it. Apple is different now. Seems like they are more interested in the stock and the numbers these days than making a great product without bugs. They obviously rushed this phone because of the lost phone episode which probably damaged sales of the 3GS. They had to get this one out before the end of the quarter or maybe they wouldn't have made their numbers. Check out the Taiwanese video that came out today. It's kind of funny and a little over the top but the basic ideas expressed are probably true. Makes perfect sense to me.

btw, I am definitely NOT an Apple basher. More like a fanboy turned sour by this latest iPhone release. Still have my iPad 3G 64GB, My 2 Macbook Pros, and my 21.5 inch iMac.

All are great products!

I thought this was a very good post...

Again, I am not an Apple basher at all. I love Apple. I just had to take all emotion and expectation out of my decision.

I believe they will release updated hardware. They are already into antennagate anyways. If they want to sell more, I believe they have to fix it. Maybe quietly. As far as letting other companies SELL there fixes. That makes no sense at all. Apple can't keep selling a bad phone and tell their customers they have to, once again, buy a fix. It ain't gonna happen. There are many people that will buy this phone only if it is fixed. Myself included.

How are you so sure that a coating wouldn't help much? There are many methods. The rubber bumpers aren't perfect either.

I believe they will make the phone better soon. Time will be on there side somewhat. Things will cool down a little bit and they will slip in a fix in. Yes there will be upset first adopters when the better one is flowing. But I believe that when people accept the rubber bumpers and the time is up they won't have any recourse. They were told that they can return their phones without any restocking fee. Any reasonable judge would have to agree. You were given an opportunity and you chose not to because you had to have the phone NOW even knowing there was an issue and even though you were given ample opportunity to return it.

So think hard and fast people on weather you want to return it now or not. You can't lose by returning it now because if there is a fix you will have the opportunity to get it if you return yours now. If they don't fix it, you can still buy it again if you have to have it so bad.

I believe everybody that has an issue with it should return it because this will force Apples hand to fix it. The more the better. They will have to draw the line when the sales weren't enough and fix it or do ok sales and wait for the next version iPhone.

Think about it.
