I have to disagree with this. Holding the phone with your shoulder becomes necessary every once in a while for everyone. If the previous iphones could do, then so should this one.

PLEASE STOP SAYING "when I hold the phone with my shoulder" it belittles the issue! I'd have to agree with Mr. Jobs if he says "you're holding it wrong" again, because you are! The phone wasn't made to balance between your head and chin. ...it's comments like this that are making us all look stupid!

I dont think belittles the issue. It highlights that people are having problems in all styles of holding the phone.

The phone should work regardless of whether its held in a traditional way or in between shoulder and head or whatever. There are enough posts on here to highlight that this issue is occuring when all styles of holding the phone are adopted.

It's ironic that the ipad advert says "there's no wrong way or right way". I'm guessing they arent going to put that line in the iPhone ad.

I have to hold the phone with my Shoulder Sometimes It DOESN'T mean that I am holding the phone wrong

Ok, so I see the thread being moved and all. I see angry / going crazy consumers. I see that the 'Apple' people obviously know about this discussion here.

Then why is something drastic not happening ?! No word from Apple..No news on Engadget, Gizmodo...No news in major media...I am waiting so badly for this issue to be resolved so that I may start thinking about buying an iPhone 4...
This is disappointing Apple...like real sad.

Here's what I just emailed to Steve:

Steve -

I have been an Apple fan since 1987. I've had numerous Macs, from a SE/30 to my current 17" MacBook Pro. (There was a IIsi, IIci, Quadra 840av, Centris 650, PowerMac 6100, 8100, G3, and a G4 in between.)

I had a QuickTake 100.

I had a Newton MessagePad.

I had the first iPod (5gb) I had the original USB-Stick iPod shuffle. I had a 40gb iPod - you know, the one with row of buttons on the top.

I bought the first iPhone on launch day. I bought the 3G on launch day. I waited on the 3GS, because I knew that the 4th generation would be "knock it out of the park, brilliant." Well... Not so much.

First off, let me say the signal-strength issue isn't an issue for me. I live in the Milwaukee area, where AT&T coverage is pretty decent. Can I replicate the "death grip" move? Yeah. Is it a deal-breaker for me? No. It's not.

I agree with you. Mobile phones drop calls. Period. Non-issue for me. (I hardly speak for the other 2 million iPhone 4 users.)

The proximity sensor thing is KILLING ME. It flat out doesn't work. Hasn't since day one. I cheek-dialed on my first call with it. I hoped it was just something that happened because it was new. Maybe it needed to be "broken in" or something. Again - not so much.

Is it hardware? Is it software? I have NO IDEA. What I do know, however, is the company that I've spent the most money with in my adult life is ignoring me. I've read the discussion boards - both threads:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475509
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2505360

I'm not alone.

Apple is more than a company to me. It's what I've "latched on to." I also ride a Harley-Davidson. It's kinda the same. I tell people - about BOTH brands, "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand."

The majority of us don't want to return our iPhones. The majority of us don't want to deal with Android, Blackberry, or even - GASP - Symbian. We don't want to.

All I want is for the company that I grew up admiring, grew up watching, grew up buying - yes, I'm a shareholder - to tell us what's up. Is it going to get fixed? Is it even possible?

Steve - you could invent, package, and market the iFart Machine - and we'd line up to give you $199 for the privilege to buy it. ($299 for the 64 gb model) We'd defend it to our friends, show it off to our coworkers, and put the sticker on our cars.

All we want is a fix - or moreover - letting us know that it CAN be fixed.

No smoke & mirrors. No RDF. Tell us the truth. I really don't want to go back to my iPhone 3G. It's lacking in just about everything. (Except the "phone" part of "iPhone.")

Thanks Steve.

Respectfully,

Jason

Bingo! You hit the nail right on the head, Bobby!! Apple's marketing one-liner for the iPad definitely does not apply to the iPhone 4. That's a shame, for sure! I'd be keeping the iPhone 4 if Steve Jobs said "there's no wrong way or right way" about iPhone 4.

...thanks for the replies guys ...when I hold my phone upside down the sensor doesn't work at all! What's up with that??? ...come on Apple make it so I can talk upside down! ....surly you might think this comment is ridiculous, but when you're dealing with a company that doesn't seem to get it, well... you get it. The way you read my upside down comment is the same way Apple reads your gripe about your lack of shoulder/chin/neck holding abilities. All I'm saying is to stop giving them opportunity for irrational excuses. 
