...thanks for the replies guys ...when I hold my phone upside down the sensor doesn't work at all! What's up with that??? ...come on Apple make it so I can talk upside down! ....surly you might think this comment is ridiculous, but when you're dealing with a company that doesn't seem to get it, well... you get it. The way you read my upside down comment is the same way Apple reads your gripe about your lack of shoulder/chin/neck holding abilities. All I'm saying is to stop giving them opportunity for irrational excuses. 

erm.. i dont think anyone here has mentioned the upside down talking.

Just because they are Apple, why should we change our phoning habits, I could talk like this before on the iphone 3g perfectly fine (I'm currently typing with my Nokia 6100 pressed against my shoulder and head because i need both hands to type). And before you say anything I have returned my Iphone 4 because I cant do this without putting someone on mute or cutting them off.

Just got a call from the Senior Advisor I've been working with and he has told me that Apple is acknowledging the issue and is working on the solution. The engineers have collected the phones they need and are trying to determine what is the best way to fix the issue. He said to hang tight and would let me know when they have a fix in place.

At least they are admitting the issue existence now and said he cant speak for the PR department putting out a release but his department is telling people they are aware of the sensor issue.

This is my only real issue with the phone but it's a big one and needs to be resolved before the end of next week when the 30 day return policy is up. I'd imagine that if this turns out to be a hardware issue and Apple resolves it with future production, you could take it back to Apple and they'll have to give you a new one. Same thing with the signal issue...if they fix it with some type of future hardware modification, they're acknowledging that there is a defect and would have to replace the defective units. Hopefully, the proximity sensor issue can be fixed via software update.

My question is where is apple in this thread? I know they have read it. Why not even respond in the thread and let everyone know what is going on? Its simple acknowledge the flaws and design flaws and let us know what is going on before we end up returning them all.

Crapple is busy deleting peoples POST 🙂 So they can avoid opening this can of worms

just talked with my local apple store and they said the official stance they are taking is that its a software fix for the proximity sensor, when pressed a bit more they said that they know of the forum discussions but that was the end of it from the stores perspective. I checked my serial # on my phone and it was produced in week 26. Also confirmed was the knowledge that the 4.1 update was out to developers but they sounded like that was a long way off from the update we are hoping for which would be a 4.0.1

I would have to say at this point three weeks later it is probably very silly of us to assume Apple is going to give us a response. The only thing left at this point is to determine a few things:

1. Are you willing to keep your phone regardless of if this is fixed or not? (use headphones etc)

2. If not, what is your deadline before you return it?

Anything other than this is wishful thinking since Apple has not responded at all in any kind of formal way. We have all assumed based on prior experience and track record of Apple products that they are going to help us with an explanation. They have already spoken by not saying anything.

Don't assume a fix is coming or is guaranteed. They have not guaranteed it. I suggest we all move forward accordingly and stop driving ourselves crazy. I have already reactivated my 3GS at AT&T but I did not return my iPhone 4 yet. I am going to do so 48 hours before the 30 day cutoff time if they do not fix this issue. Other than that I just monitor the forum to see if they provide a fix or make an official comment.

Don't drive yourself crazy. We do not have the power to fix this ourselves. It's not up to us, it's up to them whether they think this is important or not.

Just figure out what you are going to do in the worst case scenario and then hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

I will not stand for this, I'm ******. I was going to give them until next Friday to have some kind of fix. But I can see that is not going to happen. I'm going to reactive my 3gs tomorrow and call to send my iP4 back.
The first thing you learn in customer service is acknowledge the problem. Apple has failed miserably at this.
With the problems last year with the 3gs, I would have waited it out knowing they will fix the problems (which they did). This year is different, they won't acknowledge the problem or offer a solution. They are just now saying wait, wait, we'll fix it. Well, I'm not going to wait any longer and get stuck with a contract on a phone that doesn't work like a PHONE.

Thanks for saving me a trip to the Apple Store! I just got off the phone with Apple to set up my returns for 2 phones. After 45 minutes and being transferred four times, they finally set it up for me. But be prepared. After telling everyone I spoke with that the phone is DEFECTIVE, he still proceeds to tell me that they would charge a 10% restocking fee. I surely hope they won't restock these phones and then sell them to someone else. Oh, and I realized my first mistake in the call. Don't let them transfer you to Apple Care. Just demand the return.

Thanks for the update. I'm going to att in the morning and reactivate my 3gs. After that I'm calling apple and returning this gadget. It is an awesome "gadget", I just wish I could use it as a phone also.
