how can they charge you a restocking fee when they have to take it out of the box to activate it when they sell it to you?

Also, I didn't mean to make fun of your comment. I think based on Apples track record of making excellent products, everybody just assumed that a fix would be released within a few days if not immediately.

I just really want to reiterate that Apple has not promised us a fix or anything. That will keep people from coming here expecting a fix and then getting themselves all worked up and frustrated with false hope. If we do not hear anything official from Apple then we should not just be expecting a fix.

Who knows, they may feel that the majority of people feel the phone is just fine and not even be worrying about this issue so much. How do we know? We don't. That is all that I am really saying and three weeks is PLENTY of time for them to have issued a statement or at least a knowledge-base support article or something about this issue.

I think we all came here hoping Apple would have an official fix or that maybe collectively we as users could have come up with a solution to fix this problem but it is clear that we cannot fix this by ourselves.

We need Apple and they are silent. No official anything... Just a bunch of us chasing our tails in a circle. That's all we have as of today.

Just got back from the apple store and a meeting with a "genius". I have been having the proximity sensor issues since I got the phone on launch day (after waiting in line for 8 hours). I'm so ****** about how the genius handled it. As others, he proceeded to tell me about where the new sensor is located (which of course I already know) and that I should hold it differently. I proceeded to tell him that I am aware of where the sensor is and continually do everything I can to keep it pressed against my ear.

After hooking it up to diagnostics he said he would be right back and went into the back of the store for about 7 minutes. He came out and said after speaking to fellow employees he suggested I reset the network settings (which I have already done). Long story short, He refused to help me in any way other than offer a refund if I returned the phone. He wouldn't offer a replacement or explanation or anything. He only accused me of improperly holding the phone against my ear. Shortly after leaving my wife called, and wouldn't you know it, my face muted and hung up on her.

I love the iPhone otherwise but this is seriously making me think about returing it before the 30 days are up. I have owned my previous 3g for 2 years and not once had ever had this issue before. I have to believe that they could do a software update that made the sensor more "sensitive" so it shut off sooner and with a greater distance at which it shuts off. At the very least allow me to lock the screen manually during a phone call.

I really really hope for the future of Apple that they say something on Friday like "we rushed and we blew it" and "we are going to make this right"

Anything else is going to be the downturn of Apple as we know it.

Not financially, but what the brand stands for and why we love the company and it's products.

Meantime ...not withstanding, keep your eyes out for either official word on the proximity issue or your individual return window... (or invest in a bluetooth headset - j/k)

Sorry for the late post. I have never stood in line for anything ever. But like thousands others, I did for iPhone 4 on June 24th. I was so excited since this was my first iPhone ever. By the time I reached home from Apple store (just 10 miles away), I had hung up on my wife 3 times (proximity issues). I blamed myself for not holding the phone right. I had the "death grip" issues and dropped calls multiple times where my old Palm Treo (on the same network AT&T) had no problems. So I ended up returning the phone before my 30 days were up. Will never buy anything on the first day of release. Loved the IP 4 except for the "phone". Strangely, when I went to return the phone, the CR person said they had never heard of the proximity issue before !! Are they trained to say this?

I like the new apple slogan "Hold Different"

I am having the same proximity issues, called Apple today and the guy told me to take it to an Apple store and they'd replace it. He also acknowledged that it was a known issue. My wife's phone is a 4 also, it's actually a replacement from the 1st on we got, it was waaay buggy, kept popping up a no sim message. She dropped it the other day from about 2 feet in the garage and crack, shattered screen! So much for gorilla glass. I will be in route tomorrow to the Apple store with both phones, 2 hour drive! I've seen some cases where a broken glass is replaced, but who knows??

P.S. If they don't fix it I've already ordered the white parts from china, they should be here soon!

I've had my iPhone 4 for only 3 days and I've seen the "death grip" issue but it's not that big of a deal because it only makes the signal lower and not drop (I live outside of Philly and we have decent coverage everywhere). I just got off the phone with my ex-girlfriend (it's complicated) and during our 20 minute call (wish it was shorter) I hit the numeric keypad button while talking and hit a few numbers interrupting the call a few times. I then proceeded to hitting the mute button a couple times which made the conversation even weirder. God **** it why didn't Apple test thing more?!?! I want the proximity sensor thing fixed. I am willing to return the **** thing and wait for it to be fixed.

ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THE **** PHONE????????? I AM A STOCK HOLDER AND I'M ******!!!!!!!! I WANT MY iPhone 4 WORKING PERFECTLY!!!!!!!!!!!

Jul 14, 2010 7:56 PM in response to DGMVW

Got my iphone 4 on day 1. I care less about the death grip since I feel my calls are way better than my 1year old 3GS which used to drop every 5mins. I guess thats relative. Now this proximity sensor is killing me. It's unbelievable. How the **** can someone miss such an issue? I had this issue right from call 1. Unbelievable, the number of times mute button gets pressed ? or your call goes to hold and it dails someone from your contacts? APPLE you need to FIRE your testers period. I would never expect such a crappy test team at a company like Apple. Fix it before any lawsuits and get more customers, you do make great products !

I've been told by AT&T that as long as you return the iPhone 4 within the 30 day window, the restocking fee is waived. I am going to be firm about them standing by that. Some have reported on here that the corporate store hits you with the restocking fee, but that you can call AT&T Customer Service at 611 on your phone and they will remove the restocking fee if you're within the 30 day window on the return. I will test this out tomorrow when I return my iPhone 4 to an AT&T corporate store.
