Problem with Mail

When I log into mail I am getting a screen on the Mail Doctor stating that they are unable to connect to the servers on either my BT POP account or BTinternet SMTP accounts. I have checked my Mail Settings Lookup and all settings appear correct with one slight difference - the Incoming Mail Server is shown as an IMAP account whereas the Mail Doctor screen shows it as a POP account. Could this be the problem and if so how do I fix it. I am using an iMac early 2009 El Capitan.

Do a backup. Select the mailboxes of the affected account, then Mail/Mailbox/Export Mailbox, and export them to your Desktop as a backup. Then go to Mail/Preferences/Accounts, select the affected account, and the delete it using the minus sign at the bottom. Quit/reopen Mail and add the account back, setting it up as an IMAP account. If necessary, after filling in the 1st screen, hold down the option/alt key while clicking Continue. Fill in the necessary information, then click continue until all screens are filled in.
