How are devices identified for the backups. I will have two iPads and want to make certain the backup for one device does not overwrite that for the other and that when a restore is needed I have the ability to select the backup for the target device.

iCloud backup will differentiate between your devices and one iPad backup shouldn't overwrite a backup for a different iPad, though you would want to make sure you have sufficient storage to back up both: Manage your iCloud storage. If you ever needed to restore a backup, you should see the backups differentiated by device name: Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Settings, general, about - make sure each device has a unique device name. Backup files are identified by the device name.
