How can you tell if a 2018 mac mini has the 10Gb ethernet upgrade if you did not purchase the unit from Apple?

Is it not possible to determine without powering on the device and login into Mac OS? No exterior hardware identifiers?

No, the Ethernet connector is the same: RJ-45.
