Mac mini to CRT refresh rate

Hi all,

I purchased a new mac mini and I'm hoping to connect it to a CRT monitor (HP CRT Monitor p1230). I need to use this monitor for research purposes. Previously I was able to get up to refresh rates of 160 hz. With the HDMI to VGA converter I have paired with the mac mini I'm limited to 75 hz. Anything I can do to get back to the 160 hz refresh rate?

Thanks!

Avi

Hello,

Mac mini 2018’s Thunderbolt ports and USB-C ports are one in the same. You will need to either find a Thunderbolt 3.0 to VGA or use a Thunderbolt 3.0 to Thunderbolt 2.0 and then plug a Thunderbolt 2.0 to VGA adapter into it. Apple’s Thunderbolt ports are also compatible with Mini-DisplayPort so you can plug in a Mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter into the Thunderbolt 3.0 to Thunderbolt 2.0 adapter.

Mac mini - Technical Specifications - Apple

"Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports with support for:

DisplayPort

Thunderbolt (up to 40 Gbps)

USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps)

Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA supported using adapters (sold separately)"

There are lots of USB-C to VGA adapters, but since the Mac mini specs do not show support for any display over 60 Hz, they may not work for your display.
