Hotmail went offline a couple weeks ago and could not be restored. I deleted it with the intention to set it up/add it again, but no matter what I have tried I can't add hotmail to my Mac Mail again. I have looked up all kinds of solutions, none has worked. One of the error messages I'm getting is that "the account already exists".

Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts . Select an account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) in either Account Information or the panel to the right of Mailbox Behaviors. From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. See if the account is listed there. If so, delete the SMTP server for the account. Try to add the Mail account again.

Thanks! In the end it was a complicated and confusing problem where my icloud account (which I don't remember installing on mail) had to be removed (my apple id is my hotmail address) in order to be able to reinstall hotmail. Had to get help from an apple senior advisor after the first advisor took a long time to try everything and we keep ending up stuck in the same spot.
