Oleophobic coating

So I have an iPad 2017 which was bought in August 2018, from a week or so I bought it it was always having a tempered glass (9H with oleophobic coating) on it , and recently I started noticing more and more smudges on the tempered glass (more so with the dark mode, iOS 13 public beta) so today i took the screen protector off and the oleophobic coating of the screen itself seems to have worn off, how is this possible?

I have always found the coating on iPad not particularly good at hiding finger prints and smudges. The chances are however, when you removed the previous screen protector, the glue used to adhere the protector to the screen remains on the screen, causing the lack of smooth feel you are noticing. If you have a micro-fiber cloth, clean the screen with a bit of pressure to help remove the coating left behind. There are also screen cleaners made just for iDevice screens you can buy which will do a better job of cleaning the screen without damaging the factory coating on the screen.

I used to have a similar tempered glass to the one shown here, I think the oleophobic coating lasted around 1.5 years without any problems. Ps: I did try putting water droplets on my iPad and it turns out that they don’t disperse so technically my device still has oleophobic coating, however I don’t think it has the slick feeling as well as smudges appear in no time
