Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. From my understanding, you don’t hear the charging chime and the charging icon appears unexpectedly. I’d love to share some information that should help.
First, I recommend disconnecting the extension cord, restarting your Mac, then testing the issue with your Mac connected directly to the power outlet. If you have another cable, I also suggest trying to charge it with another cable and adapter.
Additionally, check for any physical damage to the charging cable or to the power adapter. If you see any damage, carry your device into an Apple Authorized Service Provider: Find Locations
If no damage is present and the issue continues, reset the SMC: How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
