My keyboard back
light is off. It does not adjust using the f5/f6 backlight adjustment keys. Is there a way I turned it off completely or is there a problem?

Try an SMC reset and PRAM reset (hold the PRAM reset for a full minute so it activates several times).
Have you tried using the Fn key as well as the keys used to adjust the keyboard backlight?
Try booting into Safe Mode to see if you can adjust it there.
If you still have problems, then you may have a hardware issue which will need to be checked out by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
