I want to see my child’s texts through family sharing

we decided to get my 12 year old a phone Tuesday because he is now at a private school and I am his daily ride home. We wanted him to have contact with me incase I’m running late from work. The reason we got him an iPhone was so that I could see his text messages. It was recommended to me to add my son through Family Sharing and to not share an iCloud. I was not aware that I wouldn’t be able to get his text messages. I think it’s important as a parent to monitor his contact at his age. What other solutions are there with Family Sharing?

Text message sharing is not a feature if family sharing.

in fact, iOS has no easy way to do this.

if you use the same Apple ID, iMessages are shared, but both ways. He sees your messages.
