Charging

Im new to apple so i have no idea how they work. I got an older iphone 5s from a friend and it was dead when he gave to me. Ive plugged it in but its show me two different screens one with a little charging cable with the battery pulsing the other where its just the battery without it pulsing. Which means it is charging?

However, if the battery is completely dead, it may not charge at all. Then your only option is to have the phone serviced:

At least with the newer versions of the firmware, it should show a red line inside the battery and a small lightning bolt outside when it’s charging but not ready to power on. When there’s enough charge to power on it will happen automatically if still connected to power. Here’s an image:
