If the installer shows up on the Dock, then right-click or Control click the installer icon on the Dock. Then hold the Option key to get the "Force Quit" option. You can also bring up the Force Quit dialog box by pressing Command + Option + Esc.

First, open Apple's Activity Monitor (in utilities if you are unfamiliar with it). Click on Network, under Process Name locate “installer” if nothing is installing, the Sent Bytes will be 0. If this is the case, click the x on the left corner and “force quit”. You will likely see a message that says something like “A program is installing if you proceed you may damage your system”. As long as nothing is being sent to your system, you are fine, so proceed, then re-boot your computer to make sure everything is ok.
