Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

I just realized last night of another problem with this issue. It was late last night and I was driving in an unfamiliar area so I was trying to use the gps on my phone. The audio wouldn't work with sync so I had to drive with the inside light on and try to read the gps while driving. This is far more of a safety issue than listening to the audio!!

Same problem with my new Toyota Camry: the lack of MAP support with my iPhone renders the text-to-speech and speech-to-text function inactive. I've left the message on the feedback page already; I hope that Apple will one day listen! Otherwise, I will have to consider getting an Android phone eventually as my trusty 2.5 years old 3GS is getting too slow for me.

Yes, I consider the text-to-speech and speech-to-text function a SAFETY feature as it supposed to be a "(almost) hands-free" operation. I agree that many things can distract a person from concentrating on the road and this could very well be one of the thing. However, if there is a situation that necessitate a person to communicate immediately, the person has to make a judgement call based on his/her ability to multitask. TTS/STT provides a safer mean to do it anyway, IMHO.

I just bought a new BMW with Technology package along with much else. Its blue tooth works for phone and sometimes tunes with limits but as far as the advertized Mobile Office Calendar or email and messages no dice with my Iphone 4 and At&t. I don't care who's fault it is I just wish they at least would recognize the flaw. The service guy for BMW didn't have a clue and Apple well I'm not sure how to get them to respond. So much for having the latest technology in the latest car.

Come on Apple live up to what you advertize and BMW make it clear what is going on.😟

It's not a flaw or fault as such, just that Apple have chosen not to use a feature the rest of the industry does. And, by the sound of it, poorly-trained BMW reps who should have at least had a basic understanding of the compatibility issues.

Best bet is just to write to BMW to get a list of compatible handsets and buy one of those.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 4 and my Sync in my Mustang. I tried a Windows phone, and it works perfect. I've been a Ford and Apple customer for years, and I'm used to having them. However, it is really annoying that apple does not do anything about fixing this issue. I would not change my iPhone, but lately I've been getting disappointed with my phone: It won't read nor reply text messages; it starts playing music automatically, and if I don't have enough charge, my battery drains.

I've been thinking about switching to the new Samsung Galaxy S 3 because it does support MAP profile. It is a shame that apple does not pay attention to its customers' needs. I wouldn't change my phone, but with this many problems, I think I'm bound to do so.

I think it's a done deal that Apple won't be introducing this anytime soon. The announcements at their recent developer conference featured a different way of integrating with car systems - a dedicated Siri button on the steering wheel seems their preferred option. A nice closed system, how unlike Apple :-)

Google just gained a whole load more customers...

According to this article: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/software/3363585/ios-6-features-you-might-have-m issed/

The iOS 6 will get Bluetooth MAP support.

I didn't catch the slide as I wasn't there and did not watch the stream, but apparently, it was announced.

Other features on the list included autocorrection for every keyboard, Bluetooth MAP support (which is commonly used to help cars better offer hands-free communication with Bluetooth devices)

Anyone know why my bluetooth might have stopped working? I just have the iPhone 4 and it was working with my car and handsfree earpiece just a few days ago. Now I can't connect to either. I couldn't recieved texts on my dash but I could use my phone and play music through the blue tooth.

I've tried removing the device and reconncting and it won't connect. Any suggestions woudl be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
