Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

Looks like you have the exact phone that I have. This might be a long shot, but in looking at other paired devices that I have, I don't see that option on them. So is it the Pairing device that tells the iPhone what Bluetooth features are available? Honestly not sure. Another long shot, but could it be the version of your Sync software? I just bought a 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium and it has the latest Sync software.

I agree that text messaging connectivity would be nice. But less face it, the MyFord Touch/Nav interface is very awkward. What I would much rather have is Siri and the iPhone interface showing up directly on the car's monitor. In other words, the iPhone drives the car's monitor, not the otherway around.

This will soon be possible on other automakers cars using iOS 7, using the iOS in the Car interface. Let's hope that Ford is not so wedded to microsoft, that they will someday allow this on our Fords as well.

I believe this link from CNET reviews explains pretty thoroughly whose issue this really is. Ford pretty much thought they'd step out and define the market and blotched this one, the us .....

Only hope is either for Ford to change it which I doubt they'll go back and want to retro patch all that fsoftware already out there, they don't hardly any after sales updates, otherwise possibly Apple reconsidering whether they'll adopt MAP.

I hate to resurrect a thread from the dead, but I was hoping to find out if anybody has been able to get SMS working with their iPhone 5S (iOS 7.0.4) and Gen1 SYNC (3.2.2). Mine used to work with my previous phone (Samsung Galaxy SIII) but since I've upgraded I have not been able to get it to work.

I suspect the answer will be a "no" but I was hoping to get a definitive answer as my searching has only yielded vague, conflicting reports.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion, but Gen1 devices cannot upgrade to Gen2. It's a hardware distinction. Gen1 devices likewise cannot upgrade to Gen2 firmware. Currently the latest Gen1 firmware is 3.2.2 and the latest Gen2 firmware is 3.6.2

When I sign into my Ford SYNC account, it tells me that my unit has the most current firmware at version 3.2.2 and does not give me an option to upgrade to 3.6.2

I had the same problem, couldn't get "Show Notifications" to show up in my iphone bluetooth settings. I FIGURED IT OUT!!! There is a setting I found in SYNC to turn on "MAP profile" or something like that. Turn that on and then go to "Texts" in SYNC and turn on Notifications. Then go to your iphone bluetooth settings and "Show Notifications" should now be an option! Turn it on and you should be good to go! NOTE: You only get a notification on SYNC that you received a text when your iphone is in lock screen. SYNC will read you the texts. But still won't let you reply through SYNC.
