Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

So I have had MFT for a little over two months now and I have been trying to get text messaging working with MFT. It is October 2012 and this has been an ongoing problem for several years. Outrageous! Initially, I thought this was just somoething new that I need to figure out how to use, but after reading all of the posts here, It looks like I would be fighting a losing battle. C'mon big companies, can't we all just get along? I agree with every post that relates this missing element to security risks for drivers of all ages. Please get all aspects of hands-free text messaging fully integrated with MFT!.

I diidn't see anyone trying to keep score over the years - is this mainly Ford's fault or Apple's? Who is really unwilling to "play with others to make advanced technology available to the public masses?User uploaded file

I'm sure that someone may have already said this so sorry if I'm being repetitive for not reading all of the 13 pages before this 😝

But anyway since this is a user form requesting it here doesn't necessarily mean it will be notice by apple. The best way to get this noticed would be for everone here to go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and select iphone and submit an enhancement request for this feature.

Cheers

There you were, waiting for something to happen in early 2011.

Here I am, Fall 2012 and I am waiting for something to happen.

Apple certainly does not care about automobile safety, or at the very least, keeping otherwise loyal iPhone customers.

I also feel the same way about the iPhone being the first to go. For me, it;s the 2013 Ford Edge Sport that I will not part with.

I had this same issue with MB 2012 SLK 350. Took me forever to get text messaging to display on screen. Siri worked fine through the navigation system. However, now that my iPhone 4S settings are correct, the text message displays on the navigation screen and is also audibly read to me via the navigation system. I selected MB Bluetooth on the phone and there were two options. One was "turn on notifications". That solved the problem. I would think "Ford Sync" would have the same capability since it seemed for a long time that the issue between Apple and MB (Map format) seemed to be a problem. Perhaps with the most recent updates to the iPhones, all have been resolved. Hopefully, this will be helpful to others.

I've decided not to wait on Apple to get MFT text option to iOS 6 and am switching phones to either the Samsung Galaxy S3 or Note 2 but I am verifying MFT works with them... Anyone know? I'll have to save all my songs to CD's to get them over to the Samsung unless there is a conversion program.

I will then sell mr 4S to get some funds back...

I subscribed to this post early on, because I was curious about the integration, but after actually having my 2013 Edge with my iPhone for a few months, I genuinely no longer care. If I want to hear my new text messages, I hold down the home button (easy to find without looking) and ask Siri to read it to me. I then have the option to reply by dictating a new message to the sender.

I've seen, using a friend's Galaxy S3, exactly what the MyFord Touch integration offers. I'm not about to get bent out of shape because I can't yet use the still-laggy MFT controls to have Samantha read my texts aloud, or read them on the car's screen. Realistically, that's just not a significant improvement in user experience beyond what my bluetooth-connected iPhone can do by itself.

I can certainly empathize with others in this thread… I adore my Edge, and I'm slightly annoyed that I don't get to use every single feature in my big shiny new toy. 😀 However, given that MFT is pretty awesome, and iOS certainly offers the best overall user experience in mobile devices, I'm still very happy with my car and my iPhone. I would think that most people would have to come to the conclusion that MAP compatability is not even close to a good reason to jump ship, unless, of course, you just want to cut off the nose to spite the face.

Just my $0.02. End rant.

Very well said, Matthew. I just upgraded to the iPhone 5 from the 4 (not 4S, so no Siri before) and I can totally see myself not even caring anymore. I've only had a few days to play with Siri in my car, and I just got my new windshield mount yesterday, but I can tell I'll prefer to use Siri over Stync anyway. Sure, like you said, it ***** to not be able to use a major feature from your brand new Ford (in my case, a 2011 Ford Escape), but that shouldn't be reason to jump ship from your $800 iPhone or your $30k car. If that's the case, then you're just making poor business decisions all around.

Siri can do a lot more than if I even got my car and iPhone to communicate effectively. I wouldn't be able o use Sync

To dictate a message reply like I can with Siri, which I'd argue is possibly more dangerous than trying to just read a text message (which Siri can also obviously do). The only difference is that I will have to reach to the home button on my phone instead of my steering wheel to prompt for voice control. Not a deal breaker for me.

Anyway just my two cents on top of yours.

I have the same problem with my 4S iphone. I have a subaru outback with built-in Bluetooth and I could receive text messages and respond with my old HTC Windows Trophy phone but not with my supposedly fancy dancy iPhone 4S . . . . amazing that I could do this with a Windows phone but not an iPhone. Just one more example of iPhone not being what it's cracked up to be.

That was it! Essentially, I had to turn that on and Disconnect/Reconnect my phone to the Sync system.

1) On your iPhone:

- Click Settings icon

- Click the Bluetooth button

- Click the blue arrow next to SYNC (assuming you're already paired)

- Click the slider icon next to Show Notifications to enable

2) Within the car's Sync system:

- Click the Settings icon (lower middle)

- Click the Phone button

- Click the Bluetooth Devices button

- Click your currently connected device

- Click the Disconnect button

- Click the Connect button

- Click the Back icon (upper-left)

- Click the Messaging button (should work for you now; did for me)
