Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

Good news! I just successfully sent two text messages by using Siri (which comes standard in the 4S) through my Focus's Bluetooth connection. I wasn't able to initiate it using the steering wheel buttons -- I had to hold the home button on the phone -- but once Siri was activated it worked seamlessly through the car's Bluetooth. It seems like an acceptable work-around.

If you activate Siri using the Home button on the phone, it will automatically connect through SYNC when the car is on. You can then use Siri normally, only the audio is amplified and you can keep your eyes on the road. To check your text messages, ask Siri to "check messages" or "read new messages." You can then ask Siri to reply, etc.

My only frustration with this has been that the connection between the phone & the car seems to distort the sound a bit, especially when there's road noise, so sometimes Siri gets the words wrong when I'm trying to dictate a text or email. For instance, I tried to dictate "I'm leaving school now..." the other day, and Siri kept thinking I said "I'm leaving pool now." Annoying. I hope that Ford and Apple can work on this in the future.

p.s. Here's a list of helpful Siri commands: http://www.mactalk.com.au/31/104774-list-siri-commands.html

The "issue" is that Sync uses a bluetooth profile that the iPhone does not, and has never supported (MAP). There is nothing to fix. The iPhone doesn't support that particular bluetooth profile. Period.

For those of you with connectivity and paring problems, Ford announced and update for their systems last week to correct those problems.

I am a Lincoln MKZ Hybrid driver. This is a HUGE opportunity for Apple in keeping with their "innovative thinking" philosophy. Come on Apple ... where are you on this issue? I am a committed Lincoln driver and a rather new Apple iphone user (i.e. NOT committed) ... I am still in my return window with my iPhone and am thinking VERY seriously about returning the iPhone and going with another product that supports text messaging via Sync unless I at least HEAR from Apple about what they are doing regarding this obvious problem (yes, I know this is a user forum ... but don't tell me that Apple staff doesn't look at it!) It is a question of saftey. I cannot believe that it has taken them this long to get on board!

I don't see any replies on this board from Apple. It would seem that with all the complaints that Apple would offer some sort of explanation or consideration. I have had iphones for a few years and do my best to support Apple and whenever they have a new iphone I try to get it as soon as possible. As I read through all of these complaint's about the exact same thing I have to realize that Apple; although I'm sure Apple appreciates our dedication, they don't necessarily appreciate us.....at least not enough to offer a simple update to our phones so that we can safely field incoming texts without veering our attention away from traffic. It would be nice if we could at least use the reply that sync offers saying, "I can't text right now because I'm driving". I have my iphone through AT&T and I wouldn't trade my AT&T service for anything but face it, there are a lot of good phones out there. Iphone use to be the leading edge of technology but now there are LOTS of leading edge phones out there! Sometimes we have to go with what has always worked best in the past....good old fashioned boycotting! Go to the Sync site and carefully decide on the phone that works best for messaging through your provider, then tell iphone.....icya!
