Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

I don't see any replies on this board from Apple. It would seem that with all the complaints that Apple would offer some sort of explanation or consideration.

Please tell/show me where yu got this info that the NHTSA is looking to stop bluetooth syncing the cell phones??? That will never happen, Just thinl about it. Their main concern right now is the young drivers and TEXTING, which takes your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds out of 6. Text involves taking eyes, hands, mind off the road. Talking to the Air on bluetooth is not worst then eating etc.!!! do your homework.

You must have just read the title of that article. Second paragraph>>>> It would apply to hands-free as well as hand-held devices, but devices installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer would be allowed, the NTSB said......Read it again!!!!!😝

Probably because it's not their idea and they thinks it's stupid :) but like Tim says no one really knows why they don't implement it. There could be legal reasons behind it too.

To all the people saying they will switch phones because of this, feel free. I don't think "texting while driving" should decide what kind a phone someone has. But if you really want to text and drive, Siri on the can do it.

Now all the people saying they are having problems with their phone not being able to connect and disconnecting all the time, that's not an Apple issue. How many people knew that there was updates for the Sync system in your vehicle? Probably not very many. When I first bought my truck in June, my 3GS and Sync worked fine. Then I got the 4S and it worked for a little while and started having issues with Sync not even seeing my phone, not reconnecting when i first turned on the vehicle, etc. I ended up going to Syncs website and updating my system, haven't had a problem since.
