Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

I wouldn't switch phones because of this, but it isn't just an issue with Fords, but other auto smartphone interface systems as well. This particular issue is an Apple issue not a Sync issue.

I'm sure someone knows at Apple why they don't support it. Perhaps it is for marketing reasons, but I wondered if it might be for security reasons. I don't really know much about MAP but it is curious why Apple chose not to support this particular protocol. That's all.

You might not switch, but there was a lot of people saying they would. I understand that there are other systems like the Sync system. I have not used the other system but from what I have read here most people are referring to Sync, plus I have a Ford with Sync so I know a little about how Sync cooperates with the iPhone. We are all wondering why they don't support it as well. We might just never find out.

+1 to have the MAP Bluetooth profile added to the next IOS update. This is a very important profile for many iPhone 3GS and 4 customers as it allows safe messaging in a multitude of vehicles and aftermarket bluetooth products for vehicles. Apple you need to listen to your customers on this. SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY. Already been too many accidents and deaths attributed to texting while driving. ONE is too many. PLEASE give us the MAP Bluetooth profile asap.

I just bought a new Ford Focus with the Touch Sync system. It's great. I too was very disappointed the Text feature doesn't work with the iPhone. My parents have an older Sync system and Text works with their older Motorola phones.

The iphone was published as one of the current best phones to use with Sync. Further investigation shows that just about everything works Except the Text feature.

Hope Apple will add this functionality in the next update.

I have just realized, thanks in part to this forum, that apple does not support 'map' protocol on the iphone. I know nothing of MAP, but as an active firefighter I receive sms alerts for fire/medical events. It would be a vast improvement for these to pop up on the screen in my 2012 prius vee wagon so that I do not have to dig around for my phone. These alerts are important enough to me (and to you, should it be your house or heart that is the subject of the alert) that I will look into another smart phone, otherwise I would not particularly care.

Is there a good reason apple does not support this software? does this site communicate with Apple?

Thanks

It is incredibly closed minded to suggest that it is not acceptable to request additional functionality be added to the iPhone. If you don't like these requests, ignore this thread.

However, this isn't the place for requesting new features. If you want to request features or suggest improvements, use the appropriate link on the Feedback page:

The new 2012 Mercedes Benz come with iPhone integreation, its great and the media interface works amazing. I get tormented daily by the "Text Messaging" button thats always greyd out and unusable. Why is apple always do backed up on their technology?! C'mon, iPhones have such beautiful interfaces but this is why people jailbreak or switch to other platforms, your so advanced yet so peurile at the same time. 😟

SIncerely,

Not really the point. I knew perfectly well when I got my Expedition nearly a year ago that it wasn't fully integrated with the iPhone, but I did rather hope that either Ford or Apple would see some sort of advantage to linking them up in due course. Perhaps Apple should use its enormous war chest to pay for an app to enable Apple and Ford to play nicely together...

I'd love Apple to add MAP (and all the other "missing" profiles) but I can't see it happening until they have a need to do it - when Apple make a device that would benefit from that connectivity to/from an iPhone, that's when it will come.

It's a shame as MAP's such a useful thing it's actually on a lot of people's minimum features list when choosing handsets now. A lack of MAP is actually driving people away from iPhones.
