Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

I don't understand the tone of your comment. Did you expect bannp to base his decision to purchase a vehicle on its compatibility with his iPhone? I had a $20 Motorola flip phone that worked with the hands-free systems in both my Fusion and my Jeep. Consumers in this thread are just asking Apple to consider integrating MAP technology with the iPhone. For all the amazing things an iPhone can do, it would be nice if it could do something simple as well.

Well said. All the negative comments about the owners not consulting the compatability charts is not helpfull at all. Many people have busy lives and demanding jobs. Many Dealers don't even know how to point the consumer to corrrect compatability charts nor do they give conumers correct information half the time. If one is able to find compatibility information many times it is out of date and of no value anyway.

Yes, we hope Apple is considering adding this Basic feature in a soon to be released update for the iPhone. In my opinion it would greatly add to usability and safety when using the iPhone in a vehicle.

As this forum is hosted by Apple I'm pretty sure they do monitor it quite closely, both from a moderation angle as well as from a marketing intelligence angle. Whether they take anything said here in terms of compalaints or suggestions into practical changes to their products is debatable.

It all comes down to money in the end, as while Apple has been a very innovative company, they are fundamentally a commercial business; they will only do things if it either stops them from loosing money or makes them more money. A million lost iphone sales due to a lack of product feature is nothing to Apple.

As far as putting MAP in iOS, Apple have a deep rooted product culture in the 'walled garden'. Everything is great and works well together inside the wall - if it has an Apple logo on it, but anything outside of that they will pick and choose and will be generally very limited. This product philosophy has made lots of money for them. If apple made cars, you bet the iphone would integrate with those cars, but right now Apple are so frightened of loosing their grip on the walled garden that they won't go near the openness of MAP.

In the end, I think Apple will have to embrace a more open product strategy and work out different ways to still make money and innovate, if not, their innovation will end up more and more linear, and nobody will care about their precious garden.

Jitlted Tim - I bet your a blast at parties. I do appreciate your input to all of us going along looking through our rose colored glasses but let up! We were just stating our disappointment in Apple for not being compatible with our cars. It seems like the company that has been a leader in the smart phones and tablets would be a bit more unversal. I don't regret my choice of car and I did research the things that mattered to me in a vehical before making my purchase. The texts on my dash would have been added bonus. Still love my car and still love Apple.

bannp - thank you for your comments. My other post has it seems been automatically removed because I mentioned the JB word.

I too am generally very happy with Apple products. As I'm unlikely to return to this thread given what lurks here, let's just hope a technical solution will one day be available.

cheers

rb888,

I'm with you guys. My sentiments also. I like Apple and I like Ford even though they are not perfect.

Not sure why Tim feels the need to bash everyone. Seriously, you mispelled a word, Big deal. I could tell what you where trying to say and as far as I'm concerned it was a good comment.

If Tim wanted to be Technically helpful he would provide links to the alledged compatibility information. He could even provide a link to the the Feedback area if he really wanted to help out and thought you should post there instead. Others have done this on other Threads and without all the bashing.

In the Real world car salesman give alot of wrong information. So do cell phone salesman. Some people might also have demanding jobs or heath issues and not always able to spend hours researching everything to see if what they have been told is wrong. We all love Tim and hopefully he will lighten up on us a little.

Hang in there guys.

Cheers

Did Any Apple Fans watch the show about Apple and Jobs after he passed??? Like the CEO said, Apple is Leader in Cash Sales, Not in Quanity Sales.. So he said the Total Dollar was from Price they put on their units and cost less to just replace units instead of repairing. Maybe all the employee Killing themselves on Apple property effects that.

HP and Compag First Had the Touch screens in 1983 and in 1999 The Jornada 420 was HP's first pocket-size Smart device and it was the first Microsoft Windows CE pocket-size PC with a color screen. Weighing 8.81 ounces and measuring 5.1 inches by 3.2 inches by 0.9 inches, it ran Microsoft Windows CE 2.11 and had full e-mail capabilities as well as a Motorola pager module that allowed immediate delivery of up-to-date information to the user without a modem.

It also featured a pen and touch interface, speaker and microphone, lithium-ion battery pack, cradle, synch cable, AC adapter and a built-in solitaire game.

In 2004, HP partners with Apple to build and launch their Apple iPod...

Iphone not out til 2007.....

HP is THE Largest hardware manufacture in the world, and talked about getting out of the hardware and into software.
