Text Messaging - iPhone Integration with Ford Sync

It is unfortunate that a technology leader such as the iPhone is missing a significant feature that RIM and Android have, and likely losing market share accordingly.

Through the "Message Access Profile" bluetooth profile, Ford Sync cars (1+ million sold to date) have the ability to read out your text messages via bluetooth, ensuring that the driver isn't distracted. With so many laws banning driver distractions (hand-free requirements, no text messaging initatives), this is a significant safety issue for today's iPhone owners.

I have seen many posts for years from users wishing that Apple would get on board with this technology, but so far it hasn't been raised as a viable option to implement.

Please reply to this thread if you are one of the 1+ million Ford Sync owners who also own an iPhone and wish this feature was implemented. I luckliy own both a BlackBerry and an iPhone, but not all people do.

HP is THE Largest hardware manufacture in the world, and talked about getting out of the hardware and into software.

Apple sold more iPads in the 4th quarter than HP did computers (Desktops and Laptops combined). Apple is also worth far more than HP. In what way is HP the largest hardware manufacturer in the world?

dunno about SirCody's statistics, but I had been using HP test equipment, oscillators, digital/analog meters, sampling scopes, etc since I was around 15. I am now 67 - so that was like 50 years ago. First bought an apple IIe maybe 25 years ago at best, so I would say HP has had one helluva head start on Apple. But, what does it matter, the iphone still don't work with my car!

Nobody ever said you'd be able to use text message with your iPhone in your car. Why do all you people believe that this is some kind of fundamental right you're being denied by the big evil company that made your phone? You have choices. If it's so important to you, go buy a different phone. And please stay off the roads in my town.

You do realize that the IPhone, IPad, and IPod are not a personal computer??? The IPad etc needs another device (a computer) to get them up and running for the first time. And Missing alot of other features to do what a PC does. As for the Dollar amount, I just looked it up and when it says highest profits, then you are paying way too much...So save and Google Largest PC manufacture etc etc.

Yes they are saying that you need that phone to work with the Infotainment system...It's already full Law to not be able to use and feature of your phone while in car, even if you are stopped at a light. The National Highway traffic saftey assoc is pushing/forcing all Auto makers to make everything Handsfree, which means built into system, not that bluetooth thing you wear or on the Visor.. look it up...with the cost of a vehicle and the Big Price on Apple doesn't make it simple as just get another one when it's time.....remember contracts try to keep in on that one phone too, well not me, new one every 9 mths....

And guess what phone is featured on most Ford Sync videos? the iPhone.

Which phone is promoted by Ford as having the Most compatible features with Sync?

You guessed it, the iPhone!

I think we have reason to be a little upset it doesn't work with the messaging feature.

My parents older Motorola Razor's work. I can send them a Text Message while they are traveling and it will read it to them. Very Nice.

I had to spend alot more money for my iPhone (which Ford is endorsing) and when I finally am able to get a Sync system the feature doesn't work. Sad. And yes I am under contract.

Actually as someone in this group constructively suggested back in December, send feed back to directly to Apple. this forum is apparently a limited user group that Apple does not monitor.

here is the suggestion and link:

This is a user-to-user tech support forum. Apple doesn't participate here. That's stated in the Terms of Use we all agreed to when we signed up. You can submit feedback to Apple using the Feedback page:

http://www.apple.com/feedback

So, send your comments to apple. That is where I sent mine and if a few thousand more do the same, iphone may just get an upgrade to recognize the MAP protocol. Actually, if we have a monitor, I would like to request to send the entire forum chain on this subject to apple. I would if I knew how.

All these snippy little comments of late are of little help to anyone.

Mar 15, 2012 1:47 PM in response to peter231

I am fully aware of that fact. Which is one of the reasons I'm amazed this inane discussion has gone on so long.

Personally, I don't care about MAP. I don't want to text from my car, and frankly, I don't want anyone else doing it either. You should be driving, not messaging your buddies and updating your facebook status.

This entire thread is pointless. It should have ended with a single response that the iPhone does NOT support this feature.

Mar 15, 2012 2:01 PM in response to KiltedTim

Then why are you in here with people that are discussing that exact subject? The whole point of importance is it's gonna be law and you know that texting will not become a lost task, in fact it is growing so if the Risk is gonna be taken then why not make it happen. SeatBelts where the same way, Children should and must be Belted but if i choose to go flying threw my windsheild in a crash, then i should have that right. Different story if there were alot of flying adults hitting another person and killing them, that would change the story. The recent Tragidy was went that girl was driving on a empty road late at night trying to stay awake texting with your BF and after her last text to him saying I can't talk about Facebook because of the hard way to send text she needed to stop texting and then she hit a truck and Died.

You do realize that the Bluetooth profile MAP lets you know that a text has been sent to you and you tell it (by Voice ) what you want to do and if you reply it will take you message by voice without every having to take hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. It's not like you have to type on the screen of the Infotainment system in the car.....

Mar 15, 2012 2:11 PM in response to KiltedTim

well mr kiltedTim, we know you are aware of that fact and probably a bunch more. However, this thread has not been useless. For example, it certainly answered my question as to why certain features did not integrate with my car system. So, I learned about the need to look for a MAP bluetooth protocol in my next phone should Apple not upgrade by the time my contract matures.

As far as use, I am an emergency responder and when off duty am alerted via text message when out of range of the siren. If that alert simply shows up on my car gps screen I don't have to fumble around looking for my phone or try to pull over on some busy hwy. I can simply glance at the screen to get the call code and priority. So, like you, I too am not interested in texting FROM my car, I simply want to see texts TO my car! Don't be so dogmatic.

Again, these support groups can be very helpful. If it continues to be a source of mystery and aggravation for you I would suggest that you simply drop out and let us happily wallow around in our ignorance! On the other hand, you could continue to try to help us old farts as evidently you are young enough to care a flick about updating your face book status and/or texting your buddies.

Who is the one who keep fueling the fire with all the cutdowns?

Do you own a Sync system or an iPhone? Can you give us links to all the compatability info you keep saying everyone is stupid for not reading.

This kind of info would be helpful. Otherwise it seems you keep generating a dozen posts from others with each of your comments.

Lighten Up. Smile, laugh about it all and try to have a brighter day.

Scroll down and click on check compatibility under "Compatible Phones". The printed brochures should also be at the dealer and I believe there is a compatibility matrix in the manual that comes with the car. I've owned iPhones since the original, all the way up through the 4S I have currently. I swore after the 83 Ford I owned that I would never buy another. I've stuck to that so far and don't see it changing.
