remove apple id from phone

Hi, I work for a company that issues phones to employees. When an employee leaves they often leave their Apple ID logged in on the phone. Sometimes we have to reset the password so the IT dept can remove it and we have access to their company email. However, we are stuck when the phone number has been cancelled and Apple wants to send a Verification Code to the phone. Is there a way to have the code sent to another phone?

If you need a 6-digit 2FA code, all that requires is the AppleID be signed into iCloud on the device. Apple 2 Factor Authentication codes are sent by iCloud push notification by default and would only be sent to an SMS or voice telephone number if requesting that at the time of requesting the 2FA code - Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

The older 2-step verification system does use SMS texts for its 4 digit codes - About two-step verification and SMS - Apple Support If that AppleID was registered for 2-step verification and had not upgraded to 2 factor authentication, then yes, you'd need to re-activate that SMS number that was registered for 2-step codes with that AppleID. Or, alternatively if you have company proof of original retail purchase so can prove company ownership, you could go into an Apple store with the device and receipt or invoice and Apple staff may be able to disassociate it from that AppleID for you.

No. The only real way to avoid issues with people tying find my iPhone and activation lock to a personal AppleID is to stop allowing employees to use personal AppleIDs with company devices. You company really needs to move to a managed deployment system so the company always retains control and access to company devices.

See - Business - IT - Apple and contact Apple business support to find out more about using a company MDM and barring employees from using personal AppleIDs on company devices.

If this is a used device, you will need to contact the previous owner to have them log out of iCloud or go to iCloud.com/Find My Phone and erase the device, then remove it from their account. If you can’t do that, the device is useless.

If necessary, if you are the original owner, take the device, the original purchase receipt with the serial number, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store.

or contact Apple ID Support. They will need to see the original purchase receipt/paperwork also.

Hi Michael, thanks for the advice. You are correct we need to get a better handle on things, unfortunaltey I don't make those decisions. However, in this particular case the former employee used a company email address not personal one, so we have access to it. I was hoping there was another way to get it off the phone without having to reactivate his line just to receive a text.
