I don't have Word.
Your advice to print to pdf worked, I just had to go to file -> then 'export' to save it as a pdf.
Thanks.
I usually forget all the app functions for Pages are in the upper most Mac bar.
The thing about Pages is that it does not open a Word .docx natively. It translates it into Pages internal document format (.pages) before it can then export (or print) that .pages content back to PDF. Because of that translation, the accuracy of the original .docx can be off, and may result in a PDF that appears differently than if the .docx was shot to PDF by MS Word or LibreOffice Writer (Word clone).
Just save them as such in Word.
You can also Print to PDF.

command P (for print)>PDF (lower right corner of the dialog box)>Save as PDF
If you don't have Word why do you have a .docx document?
Open the document in LibreOffice and save it as a PDF.
