my son has an apple id how does he use that to text
i have set up an apple id for my son....how can use that to text his friends

He would sign into the message app on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac using that AppleID, which will create his iMessage account tied to his AppleID. He can then use iMessage to text with other Apple device users. iMessage is Apple’s own internet messaging service and only works between people all using an Apple device and the iMessage service.
If he has an iPhone he can use both his AppleID (email address), his iCloud email address and his cellular telephone number to send or receive iMessages. If he does not have an iPhone but only an iPad or Mac, he can only use his AppleID email address to send and receive with.
