what if your friend gave you an iphone 3gs and dont know the passcode?
Do you know how to reset it and make it a new iphone?

If you mean it is Activation Locked you will need the help of your friend. As he or she is a friend this shouldn't be a problem. See this link-->Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support
