The reference to sixth and to 160 GB implies this is an iPod Classic from a ~decade ago, and AFAIK those devices don't support contacts and calendar. I can find no indications of support beyond music and video.
An iPod touch does support that, but that's newer than the iPod Classic.
Confusingly, there's also a sixth generation iPod classic, and a sixth- and a seventh-generation iPod touch.

Looks like a known bug / limitation / retirement / depreciation, then:
itunes no longer supports ipod classic - Apple Community
Per the following, a support call to,Apple is probably the next step:
If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
Your iPod probably doesn’t support this, as the synch-related settings would be displayed in iTunes.
If this really is an iPod Classic? That doesn’t support this.
iPod Classic provides audio and video, only. Not mail and related capabilities.
Or did you possibly mean iPod Touch?
If it’s an iPod Touch, which generation, and which iOS version?
iPod Touch can support this, though it’d show up in the iTunes synch-related settings.
Is it iOS? it says version 2.0.4 Mac. the ipod shows 'contacts' and icon, calendar & icon, it shows the right date. I used to be able to sync ical and address book to my ipods, but now they are called contacts and calendar. I cannot figure out how to sync them, I sync my music by connecting to laptop Macbook Pro with a cord. I can't find options in iTunes to sync the contacts and calendar. No my ipod classic has never gotten any email or anything, it is not connected to the internet.
it does ysnc music and podcasts etc. just not calendar & contacts. It does keep the corect date on the caklendar. I think it is terrible that they no longer support ipod classic and think that computers are vintage after only a few years. Everyone I know is hoping that they will birng back the iPod classic support.
thanks.
here are pics
What version of iOS is on the iPod?
Please tell us which of these iPod devices you have: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_iPod_models
Depending on which iPod model this is, the settings may have an “about” option, too.
I believe it is the 6th or 7th gen., 160GB
mine has a clickwheel, it is not an ipod touch. my ipod classics have always had calendar and address book, I will try to take some pics when have a chance.
