macbook pro does not go in to desktop mode

The desktop mode has been working reliably until recently.

All of sudden, the external monitor goes blank as if it is in the power saving mode.

When the lit is closed with an external monitor connected, my MBP15 won't go into desktop mode anymore. Instead, it enters sleep, and thus the external display goes blank.

MPB stays in sleep, and would not wake up unless the lit is reopened.

When awake, the external monitor also becomes alive.

Hello!

From my experience, when you are using a MacBook and have it connected to a external display you have to have a keyboard and mouse connected in order for the computer to not go to sleep when you close the lid.

Check out one of the following links for some information on how to prevent this issue:

Thank you for the suggestion, and the articles you provided.

I have been using MBP with the lid closed for awhile, but this problem appeared lately.

Today, MBP goes sleep three times from clamshell mode.

Keyboard and mouse are connected via BT wireless (they are also apple products) as well as the power plugged, and thus MBP should know not to go to sleep.

Now MBP works again in clamshell mode.

As suggested, I set the display slider to "Never" in Energy Saver Preference, and will see what happens.
