Printer Advice for an Apple Newbie

I'm making the move to Apple and slowly finding my way around. However, choosing a new printer for office and home ed use is proving 'challenging'. From user reviews of printers on Amazon, I'm sensing that Apple products aren't always well supported.

Does anyone have experience of an all in one inkjet for use with Apple stuff, please? A4, duplex print & scan, Ethernet are all essential with A3 'nice to have'. It'll need to be fairly accurate colour wise as it'll be printing out art work and some photos hence not going for a colour laser.

Initially it'll be for use with an iMac and iPad Pro with iPhones added later.

The Epson Ecotank ET-16500 seems to do it all except, possibly, Airprint. And the negative reviews. ;-)

Any and all recommendations (and warnings / horror stories) would be received gratefully.

Cheers,

Mark

That is a critical requirement... in fact it's the only requirement. Do not get a printer or multifunction device that is not AirPrint compatible.

Please review this list: About AirPrint. You only have 5191 devices to choose from, plus another ten AirPrint print server devices, so it's nearly 100% certain you will find one that includes all the features you require.

If you want a personal recommendation I have been specifying nothing but Brother devices for the past few years. No complaints.

FWIW, I have been using HP AIO printers with my Macs, PCs, & iOS (AirPrint capable) devices for years without any issues. My current HP OfficeJet Pro 6970, now a bit dated, works well for each of the features you are looking for. Chances are good that I will stick with HP going forward ... but that's just my experience.

Others will sure to provide you with their experiences with both the HPs and other brands. If you need to know anything specific, just let us know.

For years I've had and used Epson all-in-one's with my Mac's without issue. Last year we bough the Epson ET-16500 to replace two older still working Epson's that are getting hard to find ink for. We decided on the Ecotank because besides doc's, the wife still insist's on printing photos to put into photo albums. It's too soon to tell if the new Ecotank is going to last as long as those old Epson printers, but it was easy to setup, way faster and a lot cheaper on ink than those old Epsons' ever were.

We've had good service from an Epson XP-830 AIO. It is a lower-cost model. It goes through ink faster than I would like but then I would like and endless supply! As usual cartridges are not cheap. The Eco-Tank idea appeals.

It replaced an HP 6200 series. It printed well but HP never figured out the trick of doing maintenance during non-use periods. Not a problem as long as you were never in a hurry to make a copy or print a page. However, about 5 out of 10 tries, it would go to a nozzle maintenance routine that could last several minutes. Yes, when we were in a hurry! We did all the firmware updates issued and none changed this irritating behavior.

I see the same in a newer HP AIO OfficeJet 6950 at a museum where I volunteer.

Dell printers are spotty with Mac support. Some models do Macs, some don't.

Thank you for all your comments. I thought some might like to know the outcome or even find it useful.

I bought an HP LaserJet Pro MFD 4777DW. It's an older model that seems to have proved itself over time. The only things missing from my wish list are A3 handling and photo quality printing (both of which were secondary considerations) but otherwise it ticks all the primary requirements boxes.

It's a bit of a beast both in terms of weight, size and capabilities. I spent all yesterday evening clearing space for it and installing it physically as this is most definitely not a desktop printer. After wading through all the set up dialogs and creating the HP account, everything's set to print to it: one Mac, one iPad Pro, one Samsung Android tablet, three Win 10 PCs and three Android phones (iPhones scheduled for next year :-)).

So far it's performed faultlessly. The only gripe to date, is that the Mac drivers and software don't seem to have all the features / settings of their Win 10 counterparts though I've yet to compare them in detail. Installation on the Mac was far smoother and quicker than the Win 10 boxes. Annoyingly the Readiris OCR program that installed automatically under Win 10 has to be downloaded separately for the Mac: I've not yet worked out how to do that. Tomorrow's job.

Printing from the iPad via Airprint (thanks, John!) was so fast the paper was out of the machine before I'd walked upstairs to the home office.

One caveat: the 477's wired into one of my Gigabit switches as I have an intense dislike of wireless printers. I therefore have no idea how this performs on WiFi and have no intention of finding out.

Thanks for input. I agree about Dell: lousy printers but great monitors.

The random nozzle cleaning annoyance happens on Canon printers too. My trusty ip4500 has cost me a small fortune over the years by using ink during 'priming'.

I've mixed feeling about Epson. Bad experiences in the past with Epson photo printers and recently with some Workforce models incline me against them especially as the otherwise perfect 16500 doesn't support Airprint.

However, despite being an older model the XP-830 does tick all the boxes. More research required. There is such a thing as too much choice.

That's perfectly ok, and is my preference as well. Despite the implications of its name AirPrint isn't synonymous with "wireless". If Ethernet is an option I use it.

Wireless is fine for portable things, but all my desktop Macs and printers are wired whenever feasible.
