Why do I have to authorise repeatedly, without success, when I have downloaded a new song? I have downloaded the song and now it refuses to play on my various Apple devices

Recent discussions on this subject suggest that this is caused by incomplete or faulty downloads. In other words, the song file is corrupted. Delete and then re-download it.
