How to change phone number associated with Keychain?

There is a logical infinite loop in the way Keychain handles 2-factor authentication. If you lost access to the phone number that is associated with your Keychain (or apple id) and you want to CHANGE that setting to update the number to your new phone number, Keychain will send an authentication code to the phone number that you lost access to and are TRYING to change in the first place!

Is there any way out of this mess other than having to call tech support?

See if this will work.

On a computer, System Preferences/iCloud, Keychain/Options and change the number there.

On your device, go to Settings → Your Name → iCloud → Keychain and switch Keychain off then on again.

Tap "Approve with Security Code", tap "Forgot Code" and then tap "Reset".

Follow the instructions to reset iCloud keychain and create a new passcode.

You will then be prompted to update to your new number.
