Website shortcuts can be added to your iPad’s Home Screen by performing the following:

Visit a website in Safari -> Tap the action button (square button with upward facing arrow) -> Add to Home Screen.

When you say “has not appeared on my opening desk top” could you please elaborate more on what you mean?

If your home page is full of apps, did you look on a different page? A link to a website ends up looking like an app on an iOS device.
