iOS version speed on old iPad mini 2?

I have a 2014-bought iPad mini. Serial number lookup shows it to be ...

iPad mini 2 (Retina/2nd Gen, Wi-Fi Only)

Intro. October 22, 2013* Disc. March 21, 2017*

Order ME276LL/A* Model A1489 (EMC 2695*)

Family iPad mini Retina (Wi-Fi) ID iPad4,4

RAM 1 GB* VRAM None

Storage 16, 32, 64, 128 GB Optical None

It is still packing an old iOS, and runs very slowly / is clogged up.

I'm considering repurposing this for my son, but many modern apps would require an iOS update.

So... I'm curious to know how well an iOS version like iOS 12 would run on this old device.

Has anyone put iOS 12 on an iPad mini 2 like this? How does it go?

I don't want to render it unusable.

Thanks.

I addressed your iPad's slowness issue, first.

This won’t get any better with a software update until you address this slowness issue, now!

You still have not answered any of my questions, either!

I have not seen very many complaints/issues in these iPad support communities from iPad Mini 2 and 3 users about issues running iOS 12

And I am here on and off everyday in these iPad communities.

You need to do the upgrade to iOS 12.4.1 with your iPad Mini 2 connected to a computer running the latest iTunes version.

For starters, if your iPad Mini 2 is already running slow under an old iOS version, why and what have you done to fix this issue?

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?

How much free internal data storage space is left on this iPad?

How many potential background running apps do you leave hanging in the iOS app switcher?

How many active Website tabs do you leave open in a Web browser?

What kind of activities do you do with this iPad?

Try all of these tips and leave each tip active together.

Do not simply try every tip individually, expecting just one tip to be a performance “cure all”.

Many of these tips are designed to work together to help improve overall iOS/iDevice performance.

Good Luck!
