iPad Pro 12.9 Screen Light Bleed

My screen also has this issue, which I've seen posted a few other places. When I took it to an Apple store, they had a technician look at it and told me the screen was fine, maybe a few bad pixels, and offered me a credit if I traded it in for a new one. It's a little over (2) years old. I've brought in the original one I bought because the touchscreen stopped responding. They replaced it on the spot. I don't understand why they're giving me the run around this time.

Well,

I have had my 2015, 12.9 inch iPad Pro for a little over 4 years, now and I have not had this issue.

It's the backlight panel seperating/delaminating from the LCD screen that is causing this issue.

This is not a common occurrence, I am afraid, and does not affect every iPad Pro model.

Hopefully, it will not get any worse.

If it does, you should be aware that iOS devices with the Home button fingerprint ID sensor, the Home button and sensor may not function properly after the screen assembly is removed and replaced.

Only Apple has the appropriate hardware and software reset codes to be able to reset the Home button and ID sensor back to working order in a repair situation.

Most repair shops that claim to do and have experience/expertise repairing Apple mobile devices DO NOT have access to these hardware/software reset codes ( and in some cases, no access to genuine Apple parts and/or maybr good parts cannabalised from dead, non-working Apple devices and computers ) and this will render the Home button/finger ID sensor pretty much useless.

I believe Apple did this on purpose to discourage third party repair and repair shops from ever being able to fully repair any Apple mobile device.

Apple is very anti third party repair and these suuport communitites discourage us here from ever recommending any known reliable and expert, so-called, “unauthorised” Apple product repair facilities for users to either travel to or mail their devices or computers ( laptops ) to.

You maybe better of just paying for and taking the replacement iPad from Apple, in the future.

Best of Luck to You!

I’m glad I saw this thread. I also got hit with this exact issue. I have the iPad Pro 12.9” 2nd Gen bought 1 year and 9 months ago. It started with one spot in the top corner about 3-ish months ago and has spread to 4 or 5 other spots. Always the top left corner, and always along the side that connects with the Smart Keyboard. I always have my iPad in the case and take very good care of my electronics.

I first called Apple Support on the phone and spoke with someone who recommended I take it into the store. Of course COVID-19 put a damper on that for about a month. Finally I was able to get a spot on the schedule. The tech ran diagnostics and concluded that it was not caused by the user, but they could not admit it was a manufacturing defect. The only two options I was given at that time was; send it in to be serviced which means it would more than likely be replaced with the exact same model and I would have to pay $650, or option 2, buy a brand new iPad and trade this one in for $270.

I was bummed. I did some searching and found this thread, then I spoke with two more people through Apple chat support. The first guy was not helpful at all. Kind of a jerk actually. The second guy actually listened, but still recommended I take it back into the store and speak to a manager. I told him I didn’t want to be that guy. He said, ‘no really, this is what you need to do.‘ My local store was booked solid so I had to drive more than an hour to another Apple Store. I spoke with a tech and then a manager.

Bottomline, Apple doesn’t recognize this as a manufacturing defect. I refused to swap this out with the exact same model based on what I read here because I would have the same issue in another 1.5-ish years.

I bought a brand new iPad Pro and am trading this one in. Everyone I spoke to in-person said they would honor the $270 credit. We’ll see if that happens. I’m still not happy about this whole situation.

Hi romeo2903,

Backlight level varies depending on room light conditions, from around 20% up to 100% in daylight conditions - my 12,9 practically always lives on stand on a mini-desk in our tiny home/living/sleeping space ( a laptop would be too bulky and noisy with its fans ). I have accepted this still small issue as “normality”.

I understand that there is a weak spot around the backlight edges where the lamination layers tend to delaminate due to everyday mechanical stresses and even the tiniest misalignment of these layers causes uneven light distribution, brighter close to the leds.

My screen had been 100% ok during the first 18 months of ownership and then my issue developed suddenly and fully in about 2 months and has been stable during the past 11 months. I contacted the local service center, they said “sent it so we can decide at our discretion” but since the best I could hope would be a refurbished unit of unknown history (probably displaying a similar flaw over time), I decided to keep my babied unit despite this flaw - if I ever spent that much on any Apple imperfect perfect product, it will take much convincing to ever do that again. Maybe until this unit dies there will be a proper Android alternative but until then this unit stays.

I hope yours fare better but if I was moving mine around I would expect the flaw to get worse over time - it is a weak point.

A PATCH APPLE COULD APPLY would be 5% crop of the displayed screen so the issue would be invisible inside a small black margin around the visible part of the working screen but they shall never do that, accepting their design was flawed, since this would raise a legal compensation storm, nevermind Samsung’s mocking ads (one company with even worse mishap record pointing fingers instead of just shutting up).

I have screen bleed down all my left hand side my iPad is 2 years old 256gb 2nd gen it started a over 6 months ago now has got so much worst I’m claiming a repair off the uk consumer law which gives u 3 years from purchase I suggest u all do the same as it’s more a common flaw than some think maybe a battery expanding issue or the glue coming off inside I’m not taking no for a answer or willing to pay any more money out so consumer law gives me some hope

When I first posted, this thread was small, and I expected it might grow. By the standards of past manufacturing defects, however, it is still pretty short. There was a time when Apple quite generously owned its products' issues, increasing goodwill and helping it to grow into the enormous profitability it now enjoys. Sadly, such enormity can also enable a certain indifference. It seems that more users will have to report the issue (https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html) in order to wake the giant. That appears to be how it's worked in the past.

Hi glee 217, I found it.

Correct. Square Trade can be purchased only on new devices. The first time this happened, I backed up my device to iCloud, turned off activation lock, and shipped it off to Square Trade in my original box where their people tested it.

If they can repair, they’ll fix it (we both know this isn’t possible, and Apple doesn’t even repair them), so they cut a check for the full purchase price, less the deductible, I think it’s $99 or $$149, and that was that. I used that to purchase another new one.

I loved my first 12.9” iPad Pro! Fir me, it was virtually a laptop replacement (for what I do), a 256 gb model, but since I already had the Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, those wouldn’t work with the newly released 12.9” iPad Pro, so I stayed with that generation, but bought the 512 gb model instead.

I regret that now because now I have the same extract problem. I won’t waste anymore money on Apple tablets.

I can say, I love my iPhone XS Max, and my 2006 MacBook Pro has had an exceptionally long life, and it still works like new, but it’s obsolete now.

I hope I have better luck with its replacement (the 2019 MacBook Pro i9 with 16 gb of ram and 1TB).

I’m really disappointed in Apple.

Same here, my wife and I both purchased iPad Pro 2nd Gen in October 2017. After 7 months mine (512GB) started to show light bleed down the edge where the smart connector sits. Apple replaced it under warranty no questions asked. A few months back both my wife and I noticed that both of our iPads, my 512GB and her 256GB are showing the same light bleed. Both out of warranty now so Apple aren’t interested. We’re now looking for an upgrade to a newer model but recyclers won’t offer the full value as they consider the screen damaged and wipe c.£200 off their trade in offer. Neither unit has had a hard life, both have been well looked after and are otherwise in perfect condition. Since the early iPad’s we’ve traded up after two years and never had any push back or price reduction. This is deeply unfair as it’s clearly a quality issue where the part isn’t robust enough to stand the test of time. Apple need to do the right thing and acknowledge this as their problem.
