Cannot turn on home sharing on 3rd gen Apple TV. It won't accept verification code.

Have an Apple TV 3rd gen (A1427). Running software version 7.3.1 (8068). Can't get home sharing to turn on, because it won't accept the two factor verification code. Keeps rejecting it as invalid ID/Password. It WILL let me sign into iCloud and iTunes. Doesn't ask for 2 factor code with iTunes, and it accepts the code with iCloud. The only thing failing is the home sharing login. Things I've done already:

  • I've already signed out of iTunes/iCloud, reset device to factory, and set up as new. Same results. Lets me log into iTunes and iCloud. Home sharing fails with endless loop of not accepting verification code.
  • It's not due to hitting the 30 second timeout of the two factor code. I have the box up and ready, phone in hand, and enter the code in 15 seconds at most.
  • I've tried hitting it, cancelling out of the two factor prompt on my phone, and going into settings to manually generate a new verification code, and entering that. Doesn't work.
  • I've seen posts for 2nd gen ATV indicating to append code to my password when logging in. Doesn't really apply here as the software on 3rd gen does prompt for the code, but I've tried appending to password and it doesn't work. That just causes it to fail on the PW check. This trick seems to apply to devices with older software that doesn't give the distinct prompt to enter the code by itself. My device does give the distinct prompt.

I know that the ID and password are entered correctly. I know I'm not timing out on entering the two factor code. I can log into iTunes store and iCloud just fine on the device. I'm sure I could go in and turn off two factor authentication on my account and it'd work on the device. But I'm not willing to do that just to get home sharing to work on this device. Nor am I going to run out and buy a new one because of it. Is there some other trick people have run into with this?

I just had a thought: I will try this later (when I get home), but figured I would put this out there in case someone wanted to get a jump on it. When Apple implemented two-factor, they had a few applications that could not handle it. So, they create the "App-Specific Passwords" feature. To create one, login to appleid.apple.com and find the "app-specific passwords" item. Create one for your Apple TV3 and see if the generated one will work for HomeSharing. I'll try this later and post my results, but if someone else tries it sooner, post your results here.

SOLUTION!!!

Ok, so I was able to fix the issue....sort of. I took my ATV3 into the Apple store after making an appointment with the genius bar. I explained what was happening. We took the ATV, connected to a monitor, the Store wireless and then tried to authenticate (to iCloud and the App Store), and it worked. I brought it home, connected it to my home wireless and it had kept the authentication token with Apple, so I was able to connect to the Home Sharing just fine.

Please let me know and spread the word if this works. No, it's not ideal. Make an appointment, take it in, and give it a try. Also, I took a bluetooth keyboard that was already synced to my ATV so I didn't have to type my password for the whole store to see....

This gets rid of the issue, but doens't explain why it worked in the store, but not at home.

Yup. Similar thing for me. It was set up and working from forever ago. I got a new PC recently, and I wasn't seeing the library on the Apple TV. I transferred everything over to the new PC, set up the firewall with the same exceptions as the old PC, and no matter what, couldn't see the library on the Apple TV. So I decided to try turning home sharing off and back on with the Apple TV, and that's when I hit this error. Apple must have released a software update since I had initially set up the Apple TV to try to implement two factor authentication. They obviously screwed something up, and have no interest in supporting the Apple TV gen3 at this point. Which I get. Everything has an end of life for support. But if that means they just weren't going to add in code at all for two factor, that's fine. But don't add in code that breaks it. Either add in working code for two factor, or leave it out. That's just poor service on their part.

I have the exact same problem. I have even reset the Apple ID password. It works on the Mac/iTunes/iCloud but not home sharing. I’ve also tried logging in with a different Apple ID and still same problem. It was working fine 2 days ago. I have reset it then restored to factory settings. We also have the 2 factor auth code and I’m super fast at typing it in. Help please 😣

Yeah, I don't get this one at all. You took it in, connected it to the network in the store, and logged into iCloud and the iTunes (you said App Store)? Then when you went home, you went to connect to Home Sharing, and it just connected w/o prompting you to log into Home Sharing? Or you logged into Home Sharing at the Apple Store, and it somehow worked there, and then when you took it home you just left it all logged in? What gets me is, I can log into iTunes and iCloud just fine on my Apple TV. It just fails with the home sharing login. So barring Apple having some garbage code that validates the network you're on (and it treats non-Apple networks as untrusted), it shouldn't make any difference. That, or they have bad coding to where they're using an internal IP for passcode verification on Home Sharing, so that the PW check fails when you're not on Apple's internal network. Which again, would be ****-poor coding and QA on their part.

I mean...if by whatever combination of logging out/in they got you working, cheers. For me personally, the closest Apple Store is 80 miles away. I know I won't be taking the device down there just to get Home Sharing working, if that's the only way to do it. I have other options to stream my content to my TVs w/o all that. My Apple TV is a little more convenient, but not so much so that I'm driving over an hour each way to get it working.

Well, in fairness, home sharing should still let you log in at the store. I agree....it won't work and stream any content, because it's not going to see the home library content. But you're not authenticating to the actual PC at home....you're still authenticating your Apple ID to the Apple servers. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's not your PC that's popping the two factor authentication code to your phone.

Everybody else on the thread can log into iTunes and iCloud just fine, too. Barring some horseshit coding on Apple's part, it shouldn't be granting some special authentication token to the device just because you initially logged into those items from within one of their stores. Regardless....for whatever reason it worked for you....enjoy. If that's what it takes to get the device to accept a simple two factor login, then mine will just go in the trash and I'll avoid Apple's devices going forward.
