What happens after bootable USB is plugged in?

I just wanted to know what to do after I would plug in a bootable USB stick to a hard drive with no OS. I know it will boot but will I have to install the OS separately on the hard drive or after I boot will it just automatically install and run on the next boot without the USB drive.
