I have thousands of photos not just in various iPhoto and photos libraries but scattered throughout the iMac. They all, however, are stored in the Users pictures folder. What is the best method/software to remove all duplicates in this folder. I have been storing images since purchasing my first iMac, the white plastic one with the first intel chip.

Many thanks, I just wanted confirmation really that PS would be able to open all the subfolders etc within the pictures folder.

I would exclude the libraries that might be in the Pictures folder from the scan as you don't want to remove the wrong version, i.e. the one in the library.
