Old MacBook connected to new Mac mini on WiFi and internet cable. Starting migration assistant on Mac mini hangs OSX requiring power reset to recover. (I see lots of others reports of this. ) Any help if I get a FireWire connection and set the old MacBook to delete target mode?

Yes! While some older software may not work in the later macOS, all of your User Data will move and be accessible.
If I understand correctly, you are now wanting to migrate from the MacBook to the headless Mac Mini after the fact?
If so and if you could, it would ultimately give you 2 accounts on the headless Mac MIni. The one you initially setup and a second one from the MacBook.
Personally I only see 1 good option and two that will only allow you to manually move your User Data to the Mac Mini.
Thanks, but that ship has already sailed. Since I wanted to use the mini headless (without keyboard/mouse/monitor) I did a very preliminary setup at the dealers with borrowed accessories but without my time machine disk. I've been using my old MacBook and SplashTop to use it remotely,
You understand correctly. I would be fine with two personal accounts; the one I used to setup the mini and my old one from the MacBook. Also (although it didn't occur to me until very recently), I would love to be able to move my old (current) Time Machine hard disk to the mini, to preserve my disk history since 2010 or so, when I first started using Time Machine. In fact, I'd be willing to clear the mini, and reinitialize it with borrowed peripherals. Do you think Migration Assistance would work in that case with my 2007 MacBook?
