The NFC is reading intermittently on my sons diabetic Libre sensor. Must be phone as libre reader working fine. It’s meant to work with iPhone 7 above and his software up to date. Any clues please? Do I have to download another app other than the freestyle libre app we were advised?

Your posted subject says NFC, but the discussion has been around Bluetooth. I suspect that it is a Bluetooth device, not an NFC device (NFC is how Apple Pay works). Have you tried restarting the phone as described in this link-->Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If that doesn't fix it, and you are sure the top of the phone is less than an inch from the sensor, you'll need to contact the provider. They probably have a help hotline phone.

Since that is a 3rd party device, you may wish to contact Libre, especially since it uses their own app for reading. Have you experienced Bluetooth issues with any other device? Have you attempted to remove the device from the phone and then set it all back up again?
Well, it would depend on how the Libre device connects to the iPhone. Does it just do it through the app, or does it do it through Bluetooth in Settings? Check the manual that came with the device, and see what you would do to troubleshoot the issue. You could delete the app and redownload it, but for right now try resetting the Bluetooth connection.
Nothing showing in Bluetooth connected or unconnected other than my speaker and headphones. Deleted app and reinstalled but still nothing. It scanned the first 3 times initially earlier this evening but now nothing at all.
Well, I just went to the manufacturer's website, and it says it uses NFC. NFC is not Bluetooth, which is why it doesn't show up in Bluetooth settings. NFC - Near Field Communications - means what it says. NEAR. It must be within an inch or so of the sensor.
If you continue to have problems when the sensor is almost touching the top end of the phone then you need to contact the manufacturer or visit the support pages of their website.
That’s what I thought as the trainer this afternoon at hospital said phone needed to be nfc compatible on android or iPhone 7 and above which it is. But the sensor comes with manufacturers reader which works well. Should work on iPhone 7 Plus and it did first three attempts now nothing, which makes me believe it’s a phone issue rather than sensor.

If Apple Pay works there’s nothing wrong with the phone.
Apple Pay is not set up as it’s my sons phone.
Yes I’ve done the restart. Power/volume down. And top of phone touching sensor as it was when was successful first three times. Yes they have a hotline...... mon to fri 😓. Thanks for trying though.
