Ah. That's 99% likely to be a malware issue. Run MalwareBytes from https://www.malwarebytes.com and see if that helps.

How do I get rid of unwnted pop up websites? For the last week, every time I go out to a website, an unwanted site pops up and I have to cancel it to go back to the site I had entered. and yes, it did it with chrome as well.

Your original fix, setting the security to "strict", worked for me. Am hoping this works and doesn't come back. Monitoring this thread.
