activating an iphone

recently i picked up my old iphone, updated it from ios4.1 to 6 so i can give it to a kid. but the phone has refused to activate over wifi or itunes. itunes keep giving a prompt about reinserting the sim which i've done but all to no avail.

Your SIM card may have gone bad. Contact your carrier for a new one.
