Download and run Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac. All you need is the free version.

After that restart your ac and then go to Safari > Preferences > Search and choose the search engine you want.

Try Clearing your Temporary Internet Files (Cookies & Cache):

• Cookies perform remembrance of certain site-entered data.
• Cache keeps a snapshot of the last time you visited a site.

Malwarebytes for Mac will remove the adware.

But a user has to take additional step to remove this completely

Go step by step and test.

 1. Check for adware.

     Run the latest release of Malwarebytes for Mac to remove malware/adware, if installed on your Mac.

     For instructions:  Install Malwarebytes for Mac v4     Uninstall Malwarebytes for Mac

     Click the “Scan Now” button. Once done, quit Malwarebytes for Mac.

     Restart the computer and relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.

     Remove unknown profiles (1), unknown login items(@) unknown extensions(3), reset search engine (4)

     and reset Homepage (5 & 6)  listed under Additional steps.

2. Additional steps to take, if necessary.

  1. Remove unknown profiles.

      System Preferences > Profiles

      Open System Preferences, click the “Profiles” icon ( a checkmark on a gear) .

      When Profiles pane opens, select the unknown profile and click the minus button at the bottom.

  2. Remove unknown Login item.

       System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items

       Authenticate and unlock the lock.

       Select the unknown login item and click the “-“ button at the bottom left to remove it.   

  3. Remove unknown extensions:  Safari > Preferences > Extensions

   7. Shutdown the computer from  menu. Start your Mac using the Power button..

I ran Malwarebytes last night and it found a lot. Tested 3 browsers and all seemed fixed. I ran it again today and 2 issues were still found. Will keep running daily but wish I could figured out how/where it keeps propagating my system. Hope Apple addresses this issue soon.

Which three browsers?

I'd flush the cache & remove the cookies

& reboot/power down

then - flush PRAM if necessary

then remove all the extensions,

checking to see if there's anything loaded in boot up process that might need to be turned off

Malware scan doesn't take care of it. I've followed all kinds of protocols through Apple but none of them work. My search preference has always been google, but when using search it's always yahoo. Very frustrating!

I just unselected a nasty little program called DefaultProducts 1.0 listed in Safari Extensions and voila, Google is back. DefaultProducts says " it can read all webpage contents, including passwords, phone numbers and credit cards" !! I have no idea how it's all related but there you go.

I have malware called Anysearchmanager.com which has taken control of my searches to always do them on yahoo and I can't do anything with it. I don't want to trust anything downloaded to fix it because I suspect thats a scam like mac keeper. Why aren't Mac all over this ****?

I spent hours trying to remove the Yahoo search engine virus and failed. I came on Apple Support, saw macjack's suggestions run Malwarebytes and no exaggeration, five minutes later my Mac was clean. Higly recommend this as your solution.

Thank you so much! It cleared the darn virus. I suspect mine came with an "Adobe Flash download" that was disguised as "click here to download" the document I sought. Once clicked, my screen flashed with all kinds of prompts for Flash update, etc., and too fast for me to see all of them. It also changed my default safari homepage to Apple Support homepage which raised all kinds of red flags, especially not knowing if the page was even a legitimate one. This happened mid-January. While I was able to reset my defaults in safari, I only noticed yesterday that I couldn't use Google search cuz it kept redirecting me back to yahoo search...so irritating and annoying. Researching fixes returned many other "recommendations," but thankfully I found this before acting on one. This one worked for my MacPro OS X El Capitan! I also deleted the Flash Player update file that seemed to have sparked this nonsense. So, fingers-crossed going forward.

Lesson learned: if a page has too many Click Here and Download buttons, get out of there.

I have Bing as my main search engine and it keeps changing it to "any" search engine, so just not a "Yahoo" thing. It does it to me in Chrome & Firefox too. Checked for malware and it says I do not have any.

The Malwarebytes was a huge help and I will be running that regularly now. Also, I cleared my caches/cookies and history for good measure. After a reboot, my search engine was back to Google as preferred. But ugh! That whole Yahoo hijacking my searches was incredibly annoying!

Hey i know this is late but i found out

go to the system preference then click profile if you see ultrasearchapp then remove it by clicking the - sign below your left side. if it is 2 of them delete them both

I have the same problem but I am running OS 10.10 Yosemite.

It seems that I can't up date my software to the required OS.

Are there any other solutions that I could try.

I am using Chrome as my browser, as Safari seems not to be able to open some of my needed websites that it used to.

I have some kind of a worm that keeps redirecting my internet searches from my chosen engine to the yahoo search engine. I can stop it for awhile but it always returns eventually. I use a MacBook pro with OS 10.3.6 Can't find this addressed in a way that has resolved it in general on-line search (now limited to a yahoo search of course)! Help!
